Open Access鈥 to information 鈥 free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results 鈥 is transforming the way research and scientific inquiry is being conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.

This year鈥檚 theme is an invitation to answer the question of what concrete benefits can be realized by making scholarly outputs openly available. 鈥淥pen in order to鈥︹ serves as a prompt to move beyond talking about openness in itself and focus on what openness enables鈥攊n an individual discipline, at a particular institution, or in a specific context; then to take action to realize these benefits.

Open in order to increase the impact of my scholarship. Open in order to enable more equitable participation in research. Open in order to improve public health.

These are just a few examples of how this question can be answered.
