To kick off OA week, Vincent Larivi猫re, Canada Research Chair in the Transformations of Scholarly Communication聽and associate professor of information science at the 脡cole de biblioth茅conomie et des sciences de l'information, l鈥橴niversit茅 de Montr茅al will be giving a talk entitled 鈥淪cholarly communication and open access: what researchers should know鈥.

Digital technologies, which are easy to update, reuse, access and transmit and require little space, have changed how researchers produce and disseminate knowledge. However, the extent and characteristics of these changes remain unknown.聽

Dr.聽Larivi猫re's research:聽

- involves聽understanding how digital technologies have changed the scholarly communication process

- aims to increase understanding of how knowledge is currently being disseminated by analyzing the characteristics of papers written by academic researchers

- will investigate聽how new types of knowledge production are being used, how new sources of data are shared and changes in academics鈥 working practices. In particular, he is analyzing new forms of scientific articles and the various channels that are used to disseminate knowledge

- will also study聽whether new means of distribution enhance access to knowledge and speeds its dissemination. As well, he is examining whether new technologies allow research results to be widely disseminated outside the scientific community.

- will improve understanding of how knowledge is produced and distributed and will provide insight for the development of public policies on scientific and technological research

Vincent Larivi猫re is the聽Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication and聽associate professor of information science at the 脡cole de biblioth茅conomie et des sciences de l'information, l鈥橴niversit茅 de Montr茅al, where he teaches research methods and bibliometrics.
