Abstract:听In all neurodegenerative conditions, some neurons are more affected or degenerate earlier than others, this is a phenomenon called selective vulnerability. So why do some neurons die, while others are resilient to the same injury or condition? Our lab uses the retina as an approachable system to investigate the cellular mechanisms that underlie type-specific resilience to axonal damage. I will introduce how we have been using single-cell genomic approaches to parse how different retinal cell types are affected by injury and how they respond to different interventions. Our work reveals endogenous mechanisms that support neuronal survival and axon growth, which can be leveraged to develop novel neuroprotective and regenerative treatments.
