Daniel Guitton awarded UdeM honorary degree

Guitton鈥檚 research focuses on understanding the link between the visual and gaze movement systems

Daniel Guitton, PhD (AeroEng), PhD (NeuroSci), Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Universit茅 de Montr茅al in recognition of his research into the link between the visual and gaze movement systems.

A scientist at The Neuro since 1977, Prof. Guitton鈥檚 work has focused on how the neural circuits that generate eye and head movements bring the fovea onto salient features of the visual world. Prof. Guitton analyzes neural activity obtained by recording simultaneously from neurons in different visual and oculomotor areas of the brain. Another important component of his research is the study of visuo-motor deficits in neurological patients.

鈥淚 am indebted to l鈥橴niversit茅 de Montr茅al for this honour and also for playing a critical role in actualizing my early interests in neuroscience,鈥 says Prof. Guitton. 鈥淢y work has been made possible by a remarkable tradition at The Neuro 鈥 pioneered by Wilder Penfield, Brenda Milner, William Feindel, and their successors 鈥 whose organizational structure recognizes fundamental research, clinical research and clinical care as interactive disciplines whose overall goal is advancing our understanding of neurological diseases and enhancing clinical care.鈥

Universit茅 de Montr茅al awarded Prof. Guitton its highest distinction on Aug. 21, 2022 at the Palais des congr猫s.
