A series of popular luncheon meetings; a successful season in sport, particularly in football and hockey, together with the annual dinner and other events of interest, have all combined to make the session 1934-35 one of the most active and successful in the history of the Commercial Undergraduates鈥� Society.
Discussion on topics of interest of Commerce student were conducted at monthly luncheons by Dr. Stephen Leacock, James P. Manion, Comm. 鈥�29, Mr. Thomas Kennedy of the Northern Rubber Company, and E. W. Beatty, K.C., Chancellor of the University.
The 鈥淯nited States鈥� was the topic of Dr. Leacock鈥檚 address at the November gathering and as one would expect the subject was dealt with in Dr. Leacock鈥檚 own inimitable way, with the result that cascades of laughter shook the rafters at varying intervals. Mr. Manion outline his experiences as a 鈥淭rade Commissioner in Japan鈥� at the December gathering at the same time offering advice as the possibility of following up this type of work after graduation.
鈥淐anadian Economic Problems鈥� were dealt with by Mr. Kennedy who discussed and analysed the tariff and other questions.
Mr. Beatty鈥檚 discussion of the vital railway problem attracted an unusually large number of Commerce students.
Although athletic championships did not come to Commerce this season, nevertheless the football team managed to defeat Arts, Engineering and Medicine (Interfaculty Champions), and only lost close decisions to Macdonald College and Law. The hockey team also made a definite bid for fame although like the football team it lost out to Macdonald College in St. Anne鈥檚. Both these trips were considered eminently successful in all other respects, however, and those who participated retain fond memories of the event.
