Viva Voce, one of Montreal's best professional choral ensembles gave its last concert on Tuesday night at Bourgie Hall.听Viva Voce closed听its 17th season听with music by Renaissance rock star and Monteverdi role model, Cipriano De Rore.听Founder and conductor Peter Schubert says he's always looking for enticing ways to program a concert, and anniversaries are sometimes helpful.
The latest edition of Circuit musiques contemporaines,听Volume 26, no. 1, is devoted to听the Societ茅 de musique contemporaine de Qu茅bec's (SMCQ)听Homage Series composer of the year, Professor John Rea. 听Rea听has been celebrated 听by the SMCQ throughout the 2015-2016 musical season. The magazine includes听articles and contributions by Jimmie LeBlanc, Maxime McKinley, Anne Marie Messier and Michel Robert, Julien Bilodeau and John Rea himself. The issue is illustrated by artist Nicholas Voeikoff-Erens.
Professor Jacqueline Leclair,听Associate Dean of听Academic and Student Affairs听group, Ensemble Signal, performed a remarkable, hour-long work by Hans Abrahamsen in New York City March 24th, and received this New York Times review.听Leclair teaches oboe, coaches chamber music and is also Woodwind Area Chair here at the Schulich School of Music.听
Benjamin Deschamps, a Schulich School of Music Master's student has been awarded the 'Bourse de Cr茅ation Jazz' by the Conseil des Arts de Montr茅al (CAM). 听The $5,000 award will be used to help fund听the production of his second jazz recording. 听The award was announced on March 17, at the opening of the Jazz en rafale concert series. 听Deschamps is curently finishing his Master's degree as a student of Professor Joe Sullivan and has also studied with Professors Kevin Dean and Jean-Nicolas Trottier.
On March 21st, 2016 the听QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 were announced and 平特五不中's Schulich School of Music was named the top Canadian performing arts university in the country.听QS听rankings highlight the world鈥檚 top universities in 42 subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. 听The Schulich School of Music was ranked 26th overall. 听Other participating Canadian institutions include University of British Columbia, University of Montreal, and University of Toronto.

Research at 平特五不中 is often celebrated for its international collaborations and recognition; but its importance at home, in the province of Quebec, is equally meritorious. This was never more apparent than at the recent award ceremony of the 听(SQRM) when the outstanding work of six young 平特五不中 musicologists and theorists were recognized. 听On Nov. 11, 2015, four 平特五不中 students were the finalists for the annual paper competition. 听听
Professor Marcelo M. Wanderley听has been awarded anInternational Chair for 2016-2020.听Prof. Wanderley is the first 平特五不中 researcher to be awarded this chair and is among the four awardees this year.听Inria听is the听French National Institute for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. This is the first time a Professor of Music is awarded this chair, attesting to the wide variety of research directions and the impact of the work developed at the Schulich School of Music at 平特五不中. 听 听
Anna Peletsis, a doctoral听piano听student of Professor Marina Mdivani, has won the 平特五不中 Concerto Competition and will perform next season with the McGIll Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of the听Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatoire where she with professors Sergey Dorensky, Pavel Nersessian and Nikolai Luganski, she also听won the 1st prize of the International Piano Competition "Nikolai Rubinstein" in Paris in 2004. She has participated in the 鈥淛ose Iturbi鈥 masterclasses in Valencia, Spain and in a听听master class听of French Music in Paris, France.
Brent Proseus, a student of Professor Richard Stoelzel, Brass Area Chair, has been named听winner of the 2016 Schulich School of Music Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion competition. 听Brent鈥檚 first听trumpet teacher was his father, Eric and he听听continued his听studies with Gregg Good. Brent was principal trumpet in听the Michigan Junior High All-State Band and he was principal trumpet in the Michigan All-state Orchestra as well as the lead trumpet in the Michigan All-State Jazz Band.
On Feb. 7,听Chelsea Rus听was named the winner of the inaugural Wirth Vocal Prize. According to the Schulich School of Music鈥檚 website, the $25,000 prize is given to 鈥渁n exceptional voice student鈥 in recognition of outstanding accomplishment as a singer and significant promise for an international career.鈥 Pretty heady stuff for any young singer 鈥 but especially so for Rus, who had never even heard an opera until her first year of college in 2009 back home in Abbotsford, B.C.
