The Schulich School of Music enthusiastically announces the establishment of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers, open to all Canadian composers under 35 years old.聽聽The school will host the first edition of the competition in 2017, thanks to generous support from Dr. Graham Sommer, M.D. C.M. 鈥72. 聽

Since she became part of the faculty of the Schulich School of Music in 1992, ten of Professor Marina聽Mdivani鈥檚 students have won the 平特五不中 Concerto Competition. The most recent of these, Anna Peletsis, shares an interesting parallel with Mdivani鈥檚 past 鈥 both attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and eventually relocated to Canada.

Schulich School of Music Doctoral聽piano student Zhenni Li 聽has won Second Prize in the 15th Annual which was held September 2-10 in Bergen, Norway.聽聽In addition to the 20,000 euro second prize, Ms. Li was also awarded the 1000 euro Orchestra Prize. 聽Ms. Li is a student of Prof. St茅phane Lemelin.

Jeremy Cox has been named 2016-2017 Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair in Music. He brings to the school an expertise that spans performance, scholarship, teaching, academic leadership, and curriculum design.聽 Prof. Cox will be involved in many aspects of school life this year, including teaching, conference organization, academic review, and writing.

We wish to congratulate this year鈥檚 winners of the 2016 edition of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston String Quartet. Formed in 2013 by Luri Lee and Jeffrey Dyrda (BMus聽2009) on聽violin, Hezekiah Leung on聽viola聽and Jonathan Lo on聽cello, this Canadian string quartet is currently the graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University鈥檚 Shepard School of Music. Other achievements for the Quartet include first place at the 2016 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and prizes at the M-Prize and Bordeaux International String Quartet Competitions.

I've always come to music as a violinist -- a one-line player in an orchestra or ensemble. Reading was just a means of getting the music into my head and into my fingers, and though I felt like I had a deep understanding of harmony, it was completely instinctual and experiential.

One of the finest operatic singers of his generation, tenor聽John Mac Master聽began his storied showbiz career in Montreal and the West Island singing in 1970s rock 鈥榥鈥 roll bar bands.

鈥淢y longest-lasting band was called Jade, and we played Top 40 hits like Taking Care of Business and December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),鈥 says Mac Master, who was the band鈥檚 charismatic, long-haired lead singer. 鈥淲e played bars like the John Bull Pub downtown and roadhouses on the lakeshore.鈥

MISQA (平特五不中 International String Quartet Academy) was founded in 2010 by Mrs. Constance Pathy. Since its inception, Prof. Andr茅 J. Roy has assumed its leadership as per his position of general & artistic director. Each year, the academy invites the most significant practitioners of the genre to share their experience with and to educate some of the worlds most promising young quartets; four senior quartets and four junior quartets are selected every year. Private lessons, master classes and concerts are all part of the academy during two weeks.

Schulich School of Music Alumna Alexa Raine-Wright brings home the $10,000 Devonna & Amos Gerber Grand Prize and Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra Prize at the 2016 Indianapolis International Baroque Competition. Vincent Lauzer, Schulich Alumnus also won the Dee Garrett Laureate and Stanley Ritchie Audience Prizes.

The student musicians in the 平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra have easy access to mentors who regularly perform for a world-renowned orchestra. Almost two dozen members of the Orchestre symphonique de Montr茅al teach at 平特五不中鈥檚 Schulich School of Music and roughly one-third of the OSM鈥檚 musicians are 平特五不中 graduates. It's been a great month for clarinettist David Dias Da Silva聽(ArtDip'16). 聽Not only did he win聽the聽2016 Prix d'Europe, but he has also just been awarded first place in the聽聽Canadian Music Competition's聽(CMC) . 聽In addition to a $10 000 prize, he will also聽perform at the 2016 CMC鈥檚 Gala Concert with the Orchestre symphonique de Drummondville, on July 5, 2016, at Maison des arts Desjardins.
