Bruno Roy, a second year听Masters student of Ben Heppner, has placed third at the Canadian Opera Company's annual voice competition . 听The competition showcases the next generation of opera stars selected from nationwide auditions for the COC Ensemble Studio鈥擟anada鈥檚 premier training program for young opera professionals. The competition features the young singers vying for cash prizes ranging in value from $1,500 to $5,000.
Students eating at Columbia University鈥檚 John Jay Dining Hall, an airy den reverberating with undergraduate chatter, were in for a surprise last Wednesday. When they walked in for dinner, they found Matt Haimovitz [Associate Professor in the Schulich School of Music at 平特五不中] 鈥 the cellist who helped to start a trend by performing in places like an East Village punk club and a pizzeria in Jackson, Miss. 鈥 playing Bach.
Joshua Peters, violin, has been named this year鈥檚 winner of the Golden Violin Competition, following an exciting public recital competition held on Sunday October 25th in Tanna Schulich Hall.听
Since graduating the Schulich School of Music in 2011, pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin has received a constant stream of accolades. Winner of the Prix d鈥橢urope in 2011, second prize at the Montreal International Musical Competition and the third prize at the Seoul International Music Competition in South Korea in 2014, Richard-Hamelin鈥檚 latest distinction comes from the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition.
As if Montreal were not already punching above its weight when it comes to large-ensemble jazz, John Hollenbeck has moved to town. The renowned U.S. composer, bandleader and drummer/percussionist began teaching at 平特五不中鈥檚 Schulich School of Music last month, although he splits his time between New York, Berlin, where he also teaches, and Montreal. Hollenbeck, 47, is a huge catch for 平特五不中, given his acclaimed work in jazz and new music.

Versatility and virtuosity will be the hallmarks of the 平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra听(MGSO)'s debut at Toronto's famed听Koerner Hall on November 17, 2015. The first Canadian student orchestra to perform in New York's historic Carnegie Hall, the MGSO has earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic student orchestras in all of Canada. The Koerner Hall concert celebrates the 10th anniversary of the naming of the Schulich School of Music, and the听concert is presented in partnership with the 平特五不中 Alumni Association.
Schulich composer John Rea's works will be featured throughout the 2015-2016 season in performances by the 平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra, the 平特五不中 Contemporary Music Ensemble, the SMCQ and many others, as he is this year's featured Quebec composer in the SMCQ's Hommage series. 听 听In January, the Schulich School of Music will host three days of activities and conferences about his life and works as part of the celebrations. 听 about the Hommage series.

John Buck, Jazz Drums, BMus'18, was named the recipient of the first Lou Williamson Jazz Award 听yesterday in a ceremony held at the Schulich School of Music. 听This award was 听established in 2015 by Chris and Eve Millington in memory of the gifted jazz percussionist Lou Williamson . 听Williamson was a former 平特五不中 instructor and was also a highly respected music administrator. 听

The Peter Mendell Award was recently given to violinist Elizabeth Skinner, a student of Prof. Axel Strauss. 听 She receives a bursary of $2500. 听All violin, viola, cello, and bass students 听under the age of 25 and enrolled on a full-time basis in one of Quebec鈥檚 universities, all cycles, or the Conservatoire de musique du Qu茅bec, 听in third, fourth, and fifth cycles are eligible. 听

This September, a groundbreaking new program at 平特五不中's Schulich School of Music锘 will address that acute student stress and anxiety.听Starting Sept. 1, studies in wellness will be added to the curriculum and new students will be required to take part in a peer mentorship program.
