The Western Hospital was incorporated in 1874 and began accepting patients in 1880 in the Mills Building on Essex Street (next to modern-day Atwater and Ren茅-L茅vesque).聽A new wing (named after one of its benefactors and Presidents, Peter Lyall) opened in 1907. A Nurses residence was added in 1921. Discussions about amalgamation with the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) began as early as 1907. However, these only became reality in 1924, when the hospital was officially incorporated into the MGH as its Western Division. This closed in 1956 when the MGH moved to a new site on Cedar Avenue. The Western鈥檚 buildings then became part of the Montreal 颁丑颈濒诲谤别苍鈥檚 Hospital.
