There鈥檚 already plenty to celebrate during Montreal鈥檚 375th anniversary year, and now there鈥檚 yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world鈥檚 number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
Montreal jumped from last year鈥檚 seventh place to overtake reigning champ Paris, now the world鈥檚 second-place student city after four years in the top spot.
Professor Edward Klorman has received the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts for his book聽Mozart鈥檚 Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works, published by聽Cambridge University Press. 聽The annual recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in 53 categories.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has聽聽announced the nominees for the 46th Annual JUNO Awards and this year聽Schulich faculty, alumni and former faculty are well-represented in the lists of finalists. The 20th annual Conseil Qu茅becois de la musique Gala was held on Sunday, February 5th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. 聽Under the artistic direction of Alain Gauthier, Qu茅bec's musical community gathered to celebrate the artists, performers, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, composers and musicologists who have shone across the province and beyond聽over the past year. 聽Once again, there were many awards distributed to members of the Schulich community. 聽Here below is a comprehensive list of winners with connections to the school, be they graduates or professors.

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, saxophonist Sam Newsome will be performing with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, 平特五不中 Jazz Orchestra I and other guests at 7:30 p.m. in Pollack Hall. In anticipation of this concert, Schulich graduate student Chris Maskell spoke to Newsome to learn more about his life and music.

The 平特五不中 Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel,聽has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.聽
Rashaan Allwood, a student of Professor聽Hans-Ola Ericsson,聽was awarded second prize at the聽Wadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend. 聽HIs award of聽75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian. 聽鈥淚 am indeed very proud of 聽Rashaan whose聽shows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof. Ericsson. 聽"The organ聽program at Schulich聽provides talented organists and church musicians聽with an opportunity to hone their artistry and skills." 聽

As Opera 平特五不中鈥檚 landmark 60th season continues into the New Year, the momentum of its programming isn鈥檛 letting up. With major events on the horizon such as next weekend鈥檚 production of Die Fledermaus at the Monument-National and the subsequent Opera B!nge festival, both Schulich students and faculty alike have busy schedules.
In this piece, George Ensescu festival organizer Ilya Poletaev discusses his passion for the music of the composer and his motivations for organizing this first festival dedicated to his music with Schulich graduate student Chris聽Maskell. 聽
In the world of music, it鈥檚 an unfortunate reality that brilliant artists can go overlooked. Luckily, these same musicians are often championed by those who love their work, and in the case of the late Romanian composer George Enescu, his voice in Montreal is Schulich piano professor Ilya Poletaev.
Jazz musicians paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert based on his speeches and words. The concert at 平特五不中 used speeches by the civil rights leader as an auditory backdrop to the instrumental pieces.
