Schulich composition professor Denys Bouliane was the featured artist on March 20th in a Radio-France program devoted to his work. 听The 听with animator Bruno Letort can be heard in its entirety and features large excerpts of his seminal works. 听For Bouliane, 听teaching composition is like the act of composing itself: you can have manifold interests and an open mind, but ultimately you cannot offer more than who you are.
A record number of Schulich School of Music graduate students presented papers and participated听in the 43rd Annual听 (SAM) Annual Conference, which was hosted by 平特五不中 and听held听in Montreal from March 22-26. 听The Society for American Music is made up听of scholars, performers, and students dedicated to the study, teaching, and creation of the musics of the Americas.
Two Schulich PhD students,听Bryan Martin听补苍诲听Mathew Boerum, have had their company's project听advance to the final round of the 平特五不中 Dobson Cup. 听develops revolutionary 3D audio imaging which听captures and delivers fully-immersive, life-like sound from any source.
On March 11, 2017, Schulich doctoral piano student Zhenni Li, a student of Prof. St茅phane Lemelin,听听was named winner of the New York Concert Artists and Associates Worldwide Debut Audition. 听Selected as one of three finalists, out of 165 who applied, Zhenni Li performed the Rachmaninov 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 30 with the听New York Concert Artists Symphony Orchestra, 听led by conductor听Eduard Zilberkant. 听Preliminary auctions were held in Los Angeles, New York, Cologne, Warsaw, Budapest and Paris.
Students of trumpet Professor Richard Stoelzel and Paul Merkelo听have excelled听at the International Trumpet Guild Competitions and will advance to the final competition round later this spring. 听Francis LaPorte,听student of Richard Stoelzel,听and听David Koch,听student of Paul Merkelo, have听been named finalists in the International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Competition. 听Benjamin Hare, student of Richard Stoelzel,听is the first alternate for the Solo Competition Finals.

It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney鈥檚 Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation鈥檚 great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class 鈥 and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.听

An artist deeply dedicated to the range of violin and chamber music repertoire, violinist Violaine Melan莽on serves on the violin and chamber music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory (), and is Visiting Professor at the Schulich School of Music at 平特五不中.

In just a few short days,听Montreal opera fans are going to get everything they could ever wish for. As part of Montr茅al en Lumi猫re, Schulich鈥檚 Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival 听is set to present the Opera Binge Festival, which will cram a total of seven operas into the space of 24 hours.
Harpist听Antoine Malette-Ch茅nier, a Doctor of Musical Arts student of Jennifer Swartz,听has won听the 平特五不中听Concerto Competition. 听In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21,听Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. 听听He will perform听with the听平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

听The听听Concours d'Art lyrique de la Rel猫ve Musicale was held on February 17, 18 and 19 in Qu茅bec City. 听 Three current students were awarded prizes: 听tenor听Jeremy Scinocca, BMus'19 received 1st Prize, tenor Graeme Linton, B.Mus'19 and bass-baritone Reed Copeland, BMus'17 each received 3rd Prize. 听In addition baritone听Igor Mostovoi, MMus'17 was engaged by the Op茅ra national du Rhin, Strasbourg, France for their Young Artists Program for the 2017-2018 season. 听

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera 平特五不中,听the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss鈥檚听Die Fledermaus听in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lef猫vre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier. 听
Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. 听The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor 听Andris Nelsons.听

This year, the Soci茅t茅 de musique contemporaine du Qu茅bec (SMCQ) marks its 50th anniversary and Schulich students will be playing a major part in the celebrations. Notably, the 平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau鈥檚 Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ鈥檚 Montr茅al/New Musiques Festival 2017.
