The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the prestigious jury for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 is the gift of the late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of 平特五不中鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. Five composers will be chosen to create new works for piano quintet, earning prizes ranging from $5,000-$15,000 as well as a concert premiere at the Schulich School of Music on September 29, 2018.
The Schulich School of Music of 平特五不中 is proud to announce the first edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of 平特五不中鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine as well as an accomplished pianist and ardent music lover, made a gift to create a biennial competition for young Canadian composers, with a focus on chamber music.
Professor Brenda Ravenscroft is the new Dean of the Schulich School of Music. Formerly聽Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen鈥檚 University, and Professor of Music Theory and Analysis, Prof. Ravenscroft began her mandate at Schulich in July of 2017.听Prof. Ravenscroft taught Music Theory at 平特五不中鈥檚 Faculty of Music from 1991 to 1993, and has maintained close ties with 平特五不中 colleagues through research and teaching interests.

Earlier this year, 平特五不中 percussion faculty member Shawn Mativetsky released聽Rivers, 聽鈥 making him the first Quebec-based artist to do so.听Featuring George Koller on dilruba, the disc features traditional repertoire from North India passed onto Mativetsky by his tabla teacher (or聽Guru).

As a master鈥檚 student at 平特五不中, Joshua Morris, MMus鈥17, often walked through the music library where a Golden Violin sculpture sits on display.
The display case includes the names of the winners of the annual Golden Violin Competition 鈥 one of the most significant music prizes in Canada, which comes with a $25,000 cash award.鈥

The Schulich School of Music was well represented at this year's Canadian Music Competition Stepping Stone, with alums Tristan Longval-Gagn茅 (L. Mus.'10) and Antoine Malette-Ch茅nier (Grad Dip'17) winning respectively Second and Third Steinway & Sons Prizes. The Stepping Stone event was held this year at the Schulich School of Music, in Tanna Schulich Hall, from June 27th to July 5th. This year's jury members were: Annick-Patricia Carri猫re,聽Susan Hoeppner,聽Shannon Mercer,聽Katarzyna Musia艂 and聽Gwen Thompson-Robinow.听

The Schulich School of Music was well represented at the 2017 International Trumpet Guild Conference, having more students participate in the Conference鈥檚 competitions than any other university. In addition to a brilliant performance by Schulich鈥檚 Trumpet Ensemble, several students distinguished themselves in the competition鈥檚 individual categories, including David Koch, who placed second in the Orchestral Excerpts Competition (in which Francis LaPorte came in third).

At 29 years old, Montreal alto saxophonist Benjamin Deschamps (B.Mus 2012, M.Mus 2016) has a lot of accomplishments under his belt. In relatively short order, he鈥檚 released two successful records as a bandleader, directed the Montreal All City Big Band, completed various tours in North America, Poland and France, and won the Rimouski Festi Jazz Grand Prix in 2013 with his quartet. Most recently, Radio-Canada presented him as one of the four , where he was recognized for his promising career as an artist.

Sometimes, it feels best to be recognized for your hard work when you least expect it. For fiddler and recent doctoral graduate Laura Risk (Ph.D, 2017), this surprise came in the form of an email from 平特五不中 announcing that she had been awarded not only the 平特五不中 Alumni Association Graduate Award (valued at $1500), but also the Governor General鈥檚 Gold Medal 鈥 the university鈥檚 highest honour.
