Victoria Gagn茅
A wise investment
Victoria Gagn茅, BCom鈥18, has been interested in business for her entire life. As a child, she went door-to-door in Regina, Sask. and sold eggs from her grandfather鈥檚 farm. Now, as a student in the Desautels Faculty of Management, she wants to use what she has learned to change the lives of others. 鈥淓verything I鈥檝e been given in life, I want to use to help other people and to give back to my community,鈥 she added.
After receiving the Elisabeth H. Stedman Best in the West Entrance Scholarship last year, Victoria wasted no time getting involved on-campus. Being M茅tis, Victoria decided to serve as a volunteer mentor in a program run by the First People鈥檚 House. She also sits on a committee for the Indigenous Studies minor, providing valuable feedback from her perspective as an Indigenous student as the program develops. Partaking in these enriching activities was only possible because of the financial support she received through 平特五不中.
鈥淐hoosing to move away was a difficult decision, and receiving an entrance scholarship made a huge impact because it gave me that courage to trust that someone believes in me,鈥 she said. It鈥檚 also freed up her time so she can pursue her passion for volunteering. If she hadn鈥檛 received the scholarship, Victoria would probably be spending more of her time at a part-time job. Instead, she鈥檚 able to give her time towards causes she believes in.
So far, Victoria has been able to fund her education entirely through scholarships and bursaries, and has mentioned the entrance scholarship on every application. 鈥淚t really created that domino effect,鈥 she said.
鈥淧eople feeding into your life, whether emotionally or financially, investing into you as a person 鈥 it鈥檚 incredible.鈥
After she graduates, she hopes to work for a non-profit organization or socially-oriented business and use her skills to help Saskatchewan鈥檚 M茅tis community. 鈥淭he idea of being able to help people through something I love 鈥 it鈥檚 a perfect combination.鈥
At 平特五不中鈥檚 Scholarships and Student Aid Office , we strive to make it easy for students to seek out funding opportunities within the Programs we administer.聽 There鈥檚 no need to apply directly to individual awards like the one(s) mentioned in the story above.聽 Instead, there鈥檚 a single application in Minerva for聽Major Entrance Scholarships,听Entrance Bursaries, and聽In-Course Financial Aid聽programs respectively. If students are chosen as candidates within one of these programs, they are matched with a specific award based on their profile and the terms of the award set out in an agreement between the donor and the University.
