Doing well by doing good
From a young age, Corinna Ha, BCom鈥�19, had a strong social conscience. 鈥淏usiness always bothered me,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was aware that some businesses exploit people and resources, and that consumers don鈥檛 always know about it.鈥� Corinna knew that she wanted to study international business with a development bent, but, with high grades that would allow her many options, she was faced with a decision: which university would help her achieve her dreams?

Its outstanding reputation would make her an attractive candidate to potential employers, and Desautels鈥� distinctly international program and diverse student body were also strong selling points.聽 鈥溒教匚宀恢� is so well known for having an international peer group,鈥� Corinna said, 鈥渁nd you can feel the connection to the business community鈥攖here are office buildings right across the street!鈥�
Corinna was also influenced by the offer of a highly-competitive renewable Marcel A. Desautels Prestige Entrance Scholarship, which has allowed her to focus on her studies and enjoy the rich range of out-of-the-classroom opportunities available through the Faculty. In November, thanks to support from the Faculty and other sponsors, she and six other young Canadians flew to the Philippines to draft a youth declaration and find investment opportunities for Canadian companies at the APEC CEO summit (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, BA 鈥�94, also attended the summit in Manila, surrounded by screaming crowds). 鈥淪itting in on the discussions was an invaluable experience,鈥� she said.
Corinna also hopes to take advantage of other opportunities closer to home. She鈥檚 particularly interested in the Social Economy Internship Program in the Faculty鈥檚 Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management, which places students with local and international NGOs and charities.
鈥淲hen you go to a university that has invested in you, you have a really good feeling that they鈥檒l keep investing in you,鈥� she said. As any Desautels student could tell you, that鈥檚 just good business.

If students are chosen as candidates within one of these programs, they are matched with a specific award based on their profile and the terms of the award set out in an agreement between the donor and the University.
