Statistical Consulting Service
The 平特五不中 Statistical Consulting Service began operation on January 3rd, 2000. Its broad mandate is to provide statistical advice to University faculty, staff, and graduate students, as well as to the 平特五不中-affiliated research centres and hospitals.
Our Mission
Expert Advice
Our main goal is to enhance the quality of research at 平特五不中 by providing expert advice on the optimal way to collect data and on how to analyze these data once they have been collected. Faculty on either the downtown 平特五不中 campus or the MacDonald College campus as well as at 平特五不中 teaching hospitals can use the SCS for the preparation of grant proposals, for their ongoing research, as well as for the revision of manuscripts. Graduate students across campus are invited to consult the SCS while conducting their thesis research.聽
Education of graduate students
Our second, but no less important aim is to educate graduate students in statistics and biostatistics by giving them consulting experience either as part of our Statistical Consulting course (see below) or as a component of their research assistantships. They should learn how to use statistical software packages, how to design studies, how to communicate with clients, to write reports, and, above all, how to perform appropriate analyses on a variety of different data sets. In addition, such consulting services often provide a source of research topics for both students and faculty who specialize in statistics.
Statistical Consulting Course
The SCS serves as a training ground for graduate students registered in our Statistical Consulting course (189-685D). Through this course, students acquire effective communication skills and learn to identify statistical procedures that are most commonly used in consulting. By actively participating in consulting sessions held by the SCS, students in this course can acquire hands-on experience in consulting.
