Shuaib Ally is a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Islamic Studies at聽平特五不中.聽He works on reconstructing intellectual history through the Arabic-Islamic written scholarly heritage, specifically classical commentaries on the Qur示膩n (tafs墨r) and Arabic literary theory and linguistics (bal膩gha).聽His聽current聽project聽is on the practice of聽super-commentary writing聽(岣ツ乻hiya)聽in聽tafs墨r. He is examining how聽knowledge was聽produced and聽organized in聽the margins of聽manuscripts聽through a study of聽Shih膩b al-D墨n al-Khaf膩j墨鈥檚 17th C聽岣つ乻hiya聽on Bay岣嵞亀墨鈥檚聽popular聽Qur示膩n commentary,聽Anw膩r al-tanz墨l聽(Lights of Revelation).聽His PhD (University of Toronto, 2022) was about past and present anxieties over the loss of scholarly classics. He focused聽specifically on the聽Dal膩示il聽al-i士j膩z(Markers of Inimitability)聽of the 11th C聽士Abd al-Q膩hir al-Jurj膩n墨, the most influential classical book in the discipline of聽bal膩gha.聽His project traced the historical transmission and scholarly use of this allegedly lost work through paratextual evidence in its extant manuscript聽tradition.
