Accompanying Family Members

A family If you have (also called accompanying dependents) and you have questions about how to renew your immigration documents, we recommend that you contact us via the .

Accompanying family members can include:

  • Spouse or common-law partner

Ideally, when you apply to extend your Study Permit, you should include your family members in your Study Permit Extension application. In general, this is the simplest way for your family members to renew their Open Work Permit, Study Permit, and/or Visitor Records.

Once you have obtained your new Study Permit, Open Work Permit and/or Visitor Record, you and your family members can apply for your Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs).

  • Complete, validate, save, and upload all forms and other required documents.
  • You must submit and pay the fees in order for your application to be processed.

Renewing your Temporary Resident Visas (TRV)

After you obtain your new Study Permit or Work Permit, you can .

If you have a spouse/common-law partner听only听鈥 and they have an Open Work Permit

If you have no accompanying dependent children and your spouse or common-law partner has an open work permit, you and your spouse/common-law partner can , separately, for your new TRVs. In other words, you should not include your spouse/common-law partner in your own TRV application.

  • Your spouse/common-law partner will have to with Immigration Canada in order to apply for their TRV online.
  • Midway through the , you will be given an option to apply for your 鈥淭emporary Resident Visa鈥 or a 鈥淪tudy Permit鈥. Select the 鈥淭emporary Resident Visa鈥 option. *Your spouse/common-law partner should select the 鈥淭emporary Resident Visa鈥 option and not the 鈥淥pen Work Permit option鈥.

If you are also applying for a spouse/common-law partner with visitor status and/or a child

If your spouse/common-law partner has visitor status and/or you have a child in Canada who is here as your accompanying dependent, these family members cannot apply online for new TRVs.听

We recommend that you apply to extend your own TRV and your family members鈥 TRVs .

  • Include an explanatory letter explaining your status in Canada and requesting new TRVs for yourself and your accompanying family members, a proof of enrolment letter, and copies of your valid Study Permit and your family members鈥 Visitor Record(s).听
  • Follow the instructions for how and where to mail your paper application.
  • Once your application is approved, Immigration Canada will let you know how and where to submit your passport so that the TRV (counterfoil) can be affixed to your passport.
