All applicants must complete an online application in Slate, the Graduate Admissions System
/gradapplicants/apply
The following supporting documents listed below must be uploaded via the Graduate Admission System (Slate) by the deadline stipulated by the department.
- Curriculum Vitae:
Please provide a resume which should include a listing of previous research experience and publications, if applicable.
- Personal Statement:
Applicants must submit a personal statement in which they describe their background, research interests and reasons for wishing to undertake the desired program. Applicants should also address any academic 鈥榮urprises鈥 in their personal statement. For example, if applicants have a low GPA for a particular term, an incomplete degree, or a change in program, they should provide an explanation so that any special circumstances can be considered by the admissions committee during their review. The personal statement should be no more than two (2) pages long.
- Letters of Reference:
Two (2) letters of reference must accompany any application to our program. These letters must be current (not more than 6 months old), preferably on letterhead, and must be uploaded by the referee (see instructions at /gradapplicants/apply/prepare/checklist/documents#letters) .
Applicants should request references from academic or other professional employers who can attest to the applicant鈥檚 abilities and aptitudes. At听least听ONE of the letters MUST be from an academic who can evaluate their potential for graduate studies and research. If this is not possible, the applicant should contact the Graduate Program to see what alternate referees can be considered acceptable.
-
Letters should be from academic听mentors/research supervisors. Normally, letters from other laboratory members (who are not the Principal Investigator) are not accepted. Thus, letters from Research Associates, post-doctoral fellows, students and lab peers are听not accepted.听
- All referee e-mails must be institutional e-mails in order for their references to be deemed acceptable, i.e., we will NOT accept references from referees whose e-mails are @yahoo, @gmail, @hotmail, etc....听 Any such reference WILL be rejected.
-
Letters from the proposed supervisor(s) for your application are not accepted.
ANY APPLICANT HAVING UNDERTAKEN PREVIOUS GRADUATE STUDIES (WHETHER AT McGILL OR ELSEWHERE) SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT 1 OF THE LETTERS OF REFERENCE IS FROM THEIR PREVIOUS RESEARCH SUPERVISOR.
- Transcripts:
Applicants must upload transcripts for all post-secondary education undertaken (Quebec students need not submit CEGEP transcripts). The transcripts must present evidence of academic achievement: a minimum standing equivalent to a Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 3.4 (for the Ph.D. program), of 3.2听 (for the M.Sc., Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate), out of a possible 4.0.
-
Transcripts written in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation.
-
All non-平特五不中 transcripts must be accompanied by the issuing听University's grading scale in order to ensure that GPA equivalency is calculated correctly.
- GPA Self-Calculation:
- Applicants must calculate their GPA for all post-secondary studies on the听 Student GPA Conversion Worksheet听and email it in Excel format to experimental.medicine [at] mcgill.ca听by the application deadline. Step-by-Step GPA calculation instructions can be found here:听 Step-by-Step GPA Calculation Instructions
-
No grade conversion/GPA calculation is necessary for degrees/courses done at 平特五不中.
-
Grades obtained during Practicums, clerkships, internships, clinical rotations, etc., are not included in the cGPA calculation.
-
Please refer to Sample GPA Calculations:听 Chinese University GPA Conversion Example Iranian University GPA Conversion Example Indian University GPA Conversion Example

Please note, admission to graduate studies is highly competitive. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Applicants are required to have attained a cGPA of 3.4 or higher (for the Ph.D.) or 3.2 or higher (for the听M.Sc.)听in science-based courses as a measure of their potential for graduate studies and research in Experimental Medicine. Most of our successful applicants have cGPAs well above the stated minimum requirements.
