Dobson Cup prize winners prepare to pilot colour-changing artificial nails

Alejandra Huerta and Isabela Dominguez envision a future where the shade of your nails can change with a tap of your phone. During Huerta鈥檚 PhD in chemistry, she considered how organic materials could be used to change the colour of cosmetics. But by brainstorming with her sister Dominguez, a computer engineer, they determined that wearable electronics could be a better approach.

Dobson Cup finalist attracts investment from leading venture capital fund

Many service-oriented businesses suffered during the pandemic, but it was a boon for Paper, an online tutoring company. Led by Philip Cutler (BEd鈥13) and Roberto Cipriani (BSc鈥08), the company was a finalist in the 2014 Dobson Cup, an annual start-up competition that fosters entrepreneurship and gives cash awards to the best budding businesses. Today, Paper counts more than 450 staff, and over 2,200 tutors.

Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship announces 2022 Dobson Bootcamp and Cup Winners

On March 28th and 29th, 24 startups competed in the final round of the Dobson Bootcamp and Cup Program for over $200,000 in funding across 18 prizes. The winners were announced at the Dobson Cup Awards Ceremony on March 30th, presided by 平特五不中 Principal, Suzanne Fortier, Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Management, Yolande E. Chan, as well as the program鈥檚 contributors, donors, and sponsors.

On November 19, the 平特五不中 Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship announced the creation of the Entrepreneurial Women Lean Startup Program, slated to launch in the Fall of 2022. The reveal was a grand finale to a two-week-long celebration of International Women鈥檚 Entrepreneurship Day. The eight-week program will lead rising women entrepreneurs through the early stages of conceptualizing and implementing viable ventures.

Developing breakthrough patient care solutions

The pandemic prompted hospitals across Canada to implement new technologies that minimized human-to-human contact, such as a text messaging service provided by the University of Montreal Health Centre that updates family members on changes to a patient鈥檚 condition throughout their surgery or other extended treatment.

Taiga solidifies head start in race to produce off-road electric vehicles

Taiga Motors Corporation, formerly Canaccord Genuity Growth II Corp., recently announced completion of the Qualifying Transaction, solidifying its status as a leading publicly-traded manufacturer of off-road electric vehicles.

In 2016, Taiga Motors won first place in the Innovation Driven Enterprise category of the 平特五不中 Dobson Cup.

Former Dobson startup aims high

Sonder, an industry-disrupting hospitality company created by former 平特五不中 student and 平特五不中 Dobson Centre alumnus Francis Davidson, aspires to become a 鈥渉osting Amazon鈥 through an IPO. The new entity, whose shares will trade on the NASDAQ, just obtained a $30 million loan from the Quebec government to create 700 jobs at a new technological growth center in Montreal. In the long-term, Sonder has plans to operate in the 100 largest cities in the world.

Transforming air travel for people with disabilities

An idea that arose from a nightmarish flight experience for Sandra Gualtieri, founder of Gualtieri Inventions, has blossomed into an innovative new product for people living with disabilities. Informed by her own experience in living with cerebral palsy, Gualtieri designed a prototype for the Universal Seating Apparatus, a portable device that allows people with disabilities to sit comfortably upright on airplanes.

Dobson Centre surpasses $1-billion milestone in startup seed funding

Over the past three decades, the 平特五不中 Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship has catalyzed the creation of 450 active startups that have generated more than 6,000 new jobs. Now, the 平特五不中 Dobson Centre is celebrating another milestone: $1 billion in seed funding raised by the startups it has supported.

Start-ups taking off in Quebec

Although the pandemic has generated significant economic uncertainty, startups are thriving at 平特五不中鈥檚 Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship, according to its director, Marie Jos茅e Lamothe.

The Centre recently launched a virtual international tour that gives 18 Quebec startups the opportunity to explore potential markets in North America and Europe.
