Research Project:
Energy production from renewable sources such as windmills and solar panels is fluctuating and intermittent due to geographical gaps. Power-to-gas (P2G) is an energy storage technology that can close the gaps by converting the surplus energy into grid-compatible methane gas via catalyzed methanation reaction. The methanation process is usually done in a traditional fixed bed reactor at high temperature which leads to the deactivation of catalyst via sintering and low methane yield. The catalytic and plasma process engineering research group aims to develop a prototype structured reactor for direct biogas and CO2 methanation with improved heat transfer and reduced pressure drop. For that purpose, development of catalyst deposition method is required to achieve homogenous and evenly distributed catalyst coating that requires low reduction temperature and high recoatability.
