Hitting the road? Turn off the GPS, it鈥檚 bad for your brain
鈥淲e did spatial memory tests and found that degradation was correlated to GPS frequency,鈥 said V茅ronique Bohbot, a scientist at the Douglas Research Centre and a professor of psychiatry at 平特五不中. 鈥淭here was a difference between people who use GPS every day for every trip and the people who didn鈥檛 use GPS at all or just occasionally, say, once a month.鈥

Rob Whitley, an associate professor in 平特五不中鈥檚 department of psychiatry, was at a conference in Brussels a few years ago when the subject came up in a talk about the social aspects of DNA testing given by Belgian biologist and geneticist Maarten Larmuseau. 鈥淎nd I was thinking, 鈥楾his will have huge mental-health impacts,'鈥 recalled Whitley, a research scientist at the Douglas Research Centre.
Congratulations to Dr. Leon Tourian, recipient of the 平特五不中 Undergraduate Psychiatry Teaching Award for the 2020-2021 academic year! This award is presented to the individual that the graduating class felt had the greatest impact on their psychiatric education during medical school.

It is with great pleasure that we announce this year鈥檚 winners of the annual Leyton Addiction Research Prize. The competition was strong, but the review committee agreed that two papers deserved to share this year鈥檚 $1,000 prize, Maisha Iqbal鈥檚 paper titled A three-factor model of common early onset psychiatric disorders: temperament, adversity, and dopamine and Jose Maria Restrepo鈥檚 paper titled Corticolimbic DCC gene co-expression networks as predictors of impulsivity in children. Maisha is a master鈥檚 student supervised by Dr. Marco Leyton.
