This conference had the objective of bringing together researchers interested in the comic arts and their creators for discussions and presentations of research and field work on the theme of Shaking the Foundations. Mario Beaulac, professor in comic arts at the at Université du Québec en Outaouais, oversaw the event as scientific director.

Today's urban populations in Canada present changing combinations of nationalities, ethnic origins, languages, religions, ages, genders, legal status, classes and human capital. These changing combinations of demographic characteristics create conditions of "superdiversity," a concept that emphasizes that current patterns of diversity are substantially replacing those that once prevailed.
