Project Title:听Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification Secondary to Spinal Cord Injury

Project Description:听Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal bone formation in peri-articular soft tissues that causes pain, joint stiffness, and loss of function. Neurogenic HO refers to the HO resulting from central nervous system (CNS) injuries. In the absence of knowledge of the pathogenic mechanisms, we are lack effective treatment for this disabilitating condition. The goals of my research are (1) to develop clinically relevant mouse model for neurogenic HO; (2) to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms; and (3) to perform preclinical evaluation of novel therapeutics.

The term(s) to begin the project: Fall 2021

Project Title:听AI in medicine: Can AI be an accurate diagnostic aid to help physicians detect acute otitis media during clinical examination?

Project Description:听The purpose of the project is to collect data to validate an existing AI program for the classification of otitis media in the pediatric population. The student will be responsible for a background literature review of the pathology/disease being examined, helping in organizing study design, and application to the IRB for approval. Once the study is started, the student will be hands on in a clinical setting helping to acquire data directly along side the physicians and meeting with patients and their families to obtain consent. No prior knowledge of AI or coding required.

Project title: Neurotrophins in the control of bladder voiding in animal models of metabolic diseases.

Project description: Bladder dysfunction is associated to imbalance in the levels of pro- and mature neurotrophins, including NGF and BDNF, during metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes). Our team studies the mechanisms involving these neurotrophins in vivo in animal models of metabolic diseases and in vitro on bladder cell cultures. Training involves animal handling and surgeries, cell culture, RT-qPCR, microRNAs, immunoblotting, microscopy (light and confocal) and CrisprCas9, among other.
