Workshop description

This workshop will provide an introduction to tools for collecting data from social media. Examples of applications will include Twitter, Facebook public pages, and Facebook Adverts Manager. It will also present examples of demographic and computational methods that can be used to gain insights from these data. Participants will also discuss recent developments and ideas in the emerging field of digital demography including the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Provisional workshop outline:

  1. Introduction
  2. Intro to APIs (including discussion of selection bias)
  3. Accessing Twitter Data using R
  4. Analyzing Twitter Data (including difference-in-difference estimations)
  5. Using Demographic Methods with Online Populations
  6. Intro to git/Github

Workshop requirements

A laptop is required to participate in this workshop. Wireless internet access will be provided on-site. Participants will be provided with workshop materials ahead of time. Participants should anticipate 30 minutes to 1 hour of preparation to download materials and familiarize themselves with materials before the workshop.
