Urology

The Division of Pediatric Urology provides treatment and reconstructive surgery for a wide variety of congenital and acquired genitourinary problems. We treat congenital problems of the urinary tract such as hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder exstrophy, and urethral obstruction as well as issues of the genital system of both boys and girls including disorders of sexual differentiation, hypospadias, undescended testicles, hernias/hydroceles and circumcision. Our team also deals with the evaluation and management of children with urinary tract infections, stones of the urinary tract, and urinary incontinence. We offer comprehensive bladder management programs for children with complex neurological issues such as spina bifida where our services are integrated into a multidisciplinary clinic consisting of multiple medical specialists, nurses and occupational and physical therapists.

Reconstructive Surgery, Trauma, Oncology

We deal with both common and rare congenital disorders of the genitourinary tract. These include bladder exstrophy, disorders of sexual differentiation, hypospadias, vesicoureteral reflux, and urinary tract obstruction such as hydronephrosis or posterior urethral valves. These children are treated and followed throughout their childhood years in many cases. Children with neurological causes of bladder dysfunction (neurogenic bladder) are treated with reconstructive bladder surgery to treat urinary incontinence when appropriate. Organ sparing surgery is offered in the management of kidney, bladder and testes cancer, with subsequent reconstructive surgery of the urinary tract as needed. Similar reconstructive techniques are also applicable to recovery following trauma to the kidneys, ureters or urethra.

Antenatal Evaluation

We offer information and counseling to families dealing with urologic abnormalities detected on prenatal ultrasound and function within the context of a multidisciplinary team which neonatology, nephrology, obstetrics, and medical genetics among others. Care focuses on regular monitoring and throughout the pregnancy and planning for the management of potential problems once the child is delivered.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical options are offered for a variety of conditions. Surgeries are performed endoscopically through tiny incisions or via the natural passageways of the urinary tract. Treatments are offered for a variety of urinary tract conditions requiring reconstruction as well as stones of the urinary tract. Our team has pioneered many advances in this field including retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy, retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation, laparoscopic peritoneal dialysis revision, laparoscopic orchidopexy and lymphatic sparing laparoscopic varicocelectomy.

Issues of Bladder Dysfunction and Urinary Incontinence

We deal with a wide variety of voiding problems in children, which can often lead to incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. These are addressed in a comprehensive fashion with a team of physicians and nurses. Bladder re-education programs are offered. Full urodynamic testing is available for complex evaluation of conditions such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and trauma.
