The MORE series, which occurs twice a month on Fridays, is an integral component of the Department of Oncology鈥檚 Medical, Surgical, and Radiation Oncology Residency Training Programs at 平特五不中. Each session features one to three speakers and focuses on a particular disease site or on areas that cut across all disease sites. Most importantly, the MORE series is at its core a multi-disciplinary learning opportunity 鈥� where residents and fellows have an opportunity to learn together about various topics from the perspective of a different sub-specialty to their own.
The MORE Series incorporates both didactic presentations and an innovative flipped classroom approach in the form of Mock Tumour Boards. It also features longitudinal courses on research methods and quality improvement, and covers CanMEDS non-medical expert competencies. Furthermore, it incorporates four journal club sessions per year.聽
- Didactic presentations cover an overview of standards of clinical or research practice, as well as clinical controversies of significance. They often include landmark trials on multi-modality treatment, take home messages, and if possible, a list of suggested readings.
- The mock tumour board format caters to the residents鈥� preference for a more interactive, case-based approach to learning. During the MORE mock tumour board session, staff present cases for discussion as would be presented in a tumour board and trainees have opportunities to propose treatment. Staff from medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology specialties, as required depending on the topic, are present to guide discussion and to comment on the recommendations made by residents and fellows.
- The Journal Club is designed to provide a relaxed environment in which to brush up on clinical research methodology. Each article serves as a case study for an interactive discussion of issues pertaining to study design, ethics, data analysis, and strategies of communicating and interpreting results of clinical oncology research. The journal club and discussion is led by one of the residents, with assistance from a guest instructor.
