Illegal remixes: Law-breaking or creative license?聽
In the electronic dance music (EDM) community, what is viewed as intellectual property theft isn鈥檛 always up to the law鈥攊t鈥檚 up to the community. Norms around unlawful activities, such as illegal remixing, are often ambiguous and situation-specific. Ironically, illegal remixes can garner support, even career-launching acclaim. 鈥淲hat you consider deviant in one community may not be viewed as such in another community; it is in the eye of the beholder,鈥 says 平特五不中 professor of Organizational Behaviour聽at the Desautels Faculty of Management聽Amandine Ody-Brasier.聽Her recent working paper, 鈥,鈥 looks at how norms鈥 expectations聽shared by community members about what behaviours are appropriate, though they may not necessarily be legal鈥攁ffect careers and other economic outcomes in creative occupations.聽聽聽
