External Tools

You do not need to use myPath to create your IDP.

For those of you who would like to take a more career focused approach to developing your IDP, below are some additional online tools that you can use create an IDP. These tools provide excellent career information for individuals with PhDs and we strongly encourage you to explore them, even if you are not ready to select a career path

Each of the sites below focuses on specific fields, so the self-assessment exercises and the career paths are targeted. However, they all include descriptions of pathways that are open to individuals from diverse fields (e.g. Consulting) so you will likely find it useful to explore all 4 sites.

    • Canadian Institutes of Health Research is strongly recommending IDPs for all funded trainees.
    • Developed a custom聽聽and an聽.
    • Collected recent聽聽that describe the realities of the Canadian labour market.
    • 滨苍肠濒耻诲别蝉听(for trainees and mentors).
    • Built for social scientists and humanities PhDs.
    • Describes 18 job families, with lots of resources and advice on how to build your skills for a wide variety of careers.
    • Includes a fun drag and drop goal timeline and great job search tip sheets.
    • The first IDP tool created specifically for PhDs, this site targets individuals in the Life Sciences.
    • Provides resources and links to external information on 20 career paths.
    • Includes advice on career exploration, and provides example questions to ask at an information interview based on your values.
    • While the site was created by the American Chemical Society, you do not need to be an actual member to use their online career planning tool.
    • Provides an overview and related resources for 36 career areas that you can filter by sector or job function.
    • Includes a planning tool and suggestions on how to strengthen your skills. You can keep a record of your past accomplishments.
