Alexander Freund: Never Stop Learning

As doctoral trumpet student Alexander Freund (D.Mus, year 3) puts it, an essential part of being an artist is the 鈥渘ever-ending search for growth.鈥 In Freund鈥檚 case, this search led him to a long association with the M5 Mexican Brass and a teaching position for 11 years at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Michoac谩n. Allyson Rogers on Eldon Rathburn's "amazing versatility" and more

Despite being one of Canada鈥檚 most prolific composers in the twentieth century, Eldon Rathburn (LMus 1937) still remains somewhat unknown. Over the course of his 75-year musical career, Rathburn churned out hundreds of remarkable film scores that provided the soundtrack for a wide variety of productions, in addition to many orchestral and chamber pieces. With such an extensive catalogue of noteworthy works, Rathburn certainly deserves a prominent place in the Canadian musical canon.

Strathcona's Piano: Icon of the Times

While the Schulich School of Music houses over 70 grand pianos, a unique, 130-year-old Steinway is tucked away in neighbouring Royal Victoria College, a 平特五不中 residence hall. Hailed in 1887 by聽The Decorator and Furnisher聽magazine as 鈥渢he most beautiful concert grand ever designed,鈥 this one-of-a-kind instrument was commissioned from Steinway by Sir Donald Smith (also known as Lord Strathcona), who wanted the finest piano around to complete his parlour鈥檚 d茅cor.
