A student of听Andrew Wan,听Russell听began his 40-minute program with Beethoven鈥檚 famed 鈥淜reutzer鈥澨齋onata No. 9 in A Major for Piano and Violin, Op. 47听and closed with a听Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op.听23 by听Chopin,听adapted for violin and piano by Eug猫ne听Ysa每e.听Russell said听that though听he could not choose a听favourite听from听the pieces听he played during the competition, the Chopin was extra special. Shares Russell, 鈥淐hopin sadly did not write any pieces for the violin, so we are forced to steal piano pieces, with sometimes mixed success. I learned of听Ysa每e鈥檚听adaptation of the famous G Minor Chopin Ballade because one of my teacher鈥檚 former students, Jacob听Niederhoffer, did a beautiful job creating a proper published edition of this adaptation. I think it is a beautiful and effective adaptation.听For me it is so much fun to get to play one of Chopin鈥檚 most loved and emotional works on the violin. As well, it has been a fun piece to work on with Felix, as he knows this work inside and out.鈥澨
