"Days of Awe: God's Reaching During Times of Turmoil"

On cross-faith spiritual experience

Can doubt enhance faith and spirituality? Can interfaith experiences? MORSL Staff member Candice Wendt shares an emphatic yes in in honor of the Days of Awe. She recounts a series of unexpected cross-faith spiritual experiences she had during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur last year. She writes, "I鈥檓 grateful for how both doubt and multi-faith perspectives enrich my spirituality.聽Doubt聽is uncomfortable to walk with, but it can also offer pathways into greater beauty, grace, and awe. The shofar鈥檚 call and the High Holy Days brought unexpected peace and joy to me, an outsider, in a way I still can鈥檛 fully explain. In the face of such mystery, doubt helped me recognize the value of my own spiritual experiences鈥攖hat they are at the heart of my life, and 鈥渁mong聽life鈥檚 richest, fullest, profoundest, most exquisitely meaningful, most deeply personal, empowering, enlightening, and life-giving phenomena.鈥 Indeed, as I reflected on those awe-filled moments of heavenly light, I realized that I was not only experiencing moments of faith, but moments of cosmic familiarity."聽
