The MCLL peer learning concept
MCLL is based on peer learning and active participation; this is what differentiates us from traditional course offerings. We hold study groups led by a moderator, and members make presentations and/or participate in discussions. Each session normally includes round-the-table engagement, which is just as important as the presentations.
Study group moderators are MCLL members, with their topic based on life experience or a personal interest. Some will take a traditional teacher role, others act as a facilitator, organizer or animator, depending on the type of study group.
Groups meet two hours per week, usually over ten weeks, though sometimes fewer. Study groups are offered in the fall, winter and spring terms, Monday to Thursday at:
9:30 - 11:30 am   12:00 - 2:00 pm   2:30 - 4:30 pm
MCLL COVID-19 Classroom Policy
At this time, the masking and proof of vaccination requirement has been discontinued. MCLL reserves the right to reinstate such policies if the public health situation warrants it. Masks and hand sanitizer will continue to be available on the premises.
Types of Study Groups
Discussion
The group considers current events, artistic works, books or articles, films or videos, music, or may write journals. The moderator facilitates discussion among the participants.
Participant Presentation
With the guidance of the moderator, participants are expected to choose themes and make presentations.
Moderator/Participant Presentation
The moderator makes the presentations and facilitates the discussions.
Moderator Presentation
The moderator makes the presentations and facilitates the discussions.
Workshop
The study group focuses on addressing practical or lifestyle issues rather than intellectual topics.
Attendance Options
Each study group has a specific type of attendance, chosen by the moderator.
In-person
Moderators set the number of participants up to 16 plus the moderator. New moderators will be shown how to use the classroom AV equipment. To request a familiarization session, email MCLL at: mcll.scs [at] mcgill.ca .
Hybrid
MCLL’s hybrid classrooms accommodate up to 12 in-person participants and 14 online via Zoom. The rooms are designed to provide close engagement between the two groups. A video showing the MCLL hybrid setup can be viewed . Participants must register for either in-person or online attendance. If an in-person registrant cannot attend in the room that day, they can attend online. Moderators can attend either in-person or online, which will be indicated in the program list.
Online
Moderators set the maximum number of participants, often higher for moderator presentation than for discussion or participant presentation groups. For discussion study groups, 25 is the recommended maximum.
How to set up Zoom
Zoom Anxiety
MCLL uses Zoom, and many later life learners are apprehensive about computers. This is thoroughly addressed by MCLL, a separate volunteer host looks after the technical details, supporting the moderator and participants. Before the study group starts, the host will ensure that all participants can join or present at a Zoom meeting. During the session, the host works with the moderator or presenter to ensure everything goes smoothly. Members who have specific problems or questions can email MCLL at: caring.mcll [at] gmail.com.
