Research Group on Global Pasts Announces Works-in-Progress Workshop

As a means of enhancing our scholarly community on campus, the Lin Centre鈥檚 Research Group on Global Pasts will organize an annual workshop to showcase ongoing research aligned with the core agenda of our research group. The workshop will consist of a series of short presentations on individual case studies (texts, events, objects, monuments, etc.) followed by group discussion.

Professor Zarakol鈥檚 lecture was exemplary of the kind of cross-disciplinary, cross-era, cross-regional research on social and political ideas, orders and transformation that the Lin Centre seeks to encourage and promote!

Five Yan P. Lin Centre Members part of 2.5$M SSHRC inter-University Grant on Housing in Canada

Five members of the Yan P. Lin Centre and Research Group on Democracy, Space and Technology (RGDST) were one of 13 teams in the successful 鈥淨uality in Canada's Built Environment: Seeking Equity, Social Value and Sustainability鈥 SSHRC Partnership Grant worth $2,500,000. This unprecedented grant will assure the collaboration of a total of 14 universities, 70 researchers and 68 public and private organizations from every level of government across the country.听

Bruno Latour awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize

Bruno Latour, who delivered the 2021 Lin Centre Annual Lecture, has been awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize, "presented to individuals who have made significant contributions in the fields of science and technology, as well as the arts and philosophy." Among the previous Kyoto Prize Laureates is Lin Centre emeritus member Charles Taylor.

Evan Fox-Decent and S茅bastien Jodoin named Canada Research Chairs

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that two of its scholars have been named Canada Research Chairs. Professor听Evan Fox-Decent (member of the Research Group on Constitutional Studies) has been named the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Cosmopolitan Law and Justice, and Professor听S茅bastien Jodoin听has been named the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Human Rights and the Environment.

Yves Winter's 鈥淢achiavelli and the Orders of Violence鈥 has been awarded the Canadian Political Science Association's CB Macpherson Prize for the best book in political theory.

The prize jury said "In this richly theorized and elegantly written book, Yves Winter offers a systematic treatment of Machiavelli's distinctive approach to political violence. Winter's analysis illuminates the public and performative nature of political violence in Machiavelli's thought and emphasizes how Machiavelli crucially views violence as a spectacle rather than merely a means to punish or coerce behavior.

Daniel Weinstock, a founding member of the Lin Centre's faculty and a member of its Research Group on Constitutional Studies, has been appointed as the next holder of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy in the Faculties of Law and Arts.
