Master of Arts in Educational Psychology

This Master's level program focuses on gaining skills for educational research applicable to the health professions and on how educational psychology and related theories inform the design, implementation and assessment of educational programs in the health professions. This program will produce a graduate who can recognize the role of education in a health professions context, who possesses the skills in research to conduct empirical research in health education settings, and who can apply research results to solve practical problems in this field. The program is offered jointly between the 平特五不中 Institute of Health Sciences Education and the 平特五不中 Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology.

The program will be of interest to clinicians in all health professions and teachers in the basic health sciences who aspire to become leaders in the field of health professions education, through conducting educational research, education administration and/or curriculum development. It will be of equal interest to educational psychology graduate students wishing to specialize in health professions education.


Program Overview

  • The degree will be a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology (Health Professions Stream).
  • The program can be completed in two years, full-time (four courses/term), or in four years, half-time (two courses/term).
  • The program consists of 48 credits, of which 24 credits are associated with a thesis.
  • All classes (except statistics courses) meet once a week, for three hours. Statistics courses have a lab component; they meet twice a week, for six hours total. They typical study time associated with each hour in class is three hours outside of class.
  • The Cognition and Instruction Program Director will advise you in course selection and thesis supervision.
  • A member of the Educational & Counselling Psychology department and a member of the Institute of Health Sciences Education will co-supervise your thesis. Students normally choose their thesis supervisor during the first year.

Eligibility Requirements

  • A background in health professions, psychology, or other related fields;
  • A strong GPA in past undergraduate and/or graduate studies;
  • Strong letters of reference;
  • A personal statement.
