Heritage
The ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Archives was established in 1962 with the appointment of ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ’s first University Archivist, Alan Ridge. The University Archives is the University’s official repository of records, providing both archives and records management services to the ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ community. Reference services are also provided to all ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ users as well as the general public. Storage for the University Archives was first located in the stacks of the Redpath Library, with the office of the University Archivist located in the James Administration Building. In 1971 the Archives moved to storage, access and administrative offices in the McLennan Library building, where it remains today. The University Archives also has two remote storage facilities located within a fifteen minute walking distance of its McLennan Library office. The University Archives stores over 18,000 boxes of ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ institutional records and has an extensive collection of private papers or manuscripts related to ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ consisting of more than 1,200 cubic foot boxes.
The University Archives’ Records Management Program identifies and protects vital University records, and regulates the flow of all University records, from paper to electronic/digital formats. The principal tool of the program is the university Records Retention Schedule (MURRS), a compilation of the University’s records keeping practices required by Quebec legislation. The University Archives also designs records keeping systems for ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ’s offices.
The University Archives Reading Room contains a range of reference resources, including finding aids for manuscript holdings and university records, FAQ information files about ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ, and a range of published resources on the history of the University and its community, including University calendars, Old ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ and ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ News.
The University Archives web site provides the 1985 three-volume Guide to Archival Resources at ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ (a guide to all of the archival holdings held by ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ archives, libraries and museums), and the Guide Update for the 1985-1995 period; as well as finding aids to fonds and images held in the collections.
