Research Seminar: Lessons from healthy lifestyles-focused projects with Indigenous communities
Brittany Jock and Alex McComber, Assistant Professors at the Department of Family Medicine, will provide information on several projects that have evolved from the Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Program, a community-based participatory research project since 1994 which has a long association with the Department. Work in diabetes prevention for children has led to new areas of exploration including community mobilization with inter-community sharing around a healthy lifestyles effort; and developments in food security with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
From attending this workshop participants will:
- become familiar with current successful Indigenous-focused health research efforts;
- understand how community engagement as equal partners has positive impact on project implementation;
- explore some of the challenges of ensuring continuity, building capacity, and sustainability.

Research Seminar Series
Every month, a research seminar is held at the Department of Family Medicine where we either feature visiting researchers from other universities, or showcase the work of our own researchers. The seminars are attended by our graduate students, researchers and clinicians, and are open to the whole 平特五不中 community. They address a wide range of research methods and topics relevant to primary health care, and provide opportunity for interaction and exchange with the speakers. The Research Seminars are usually on Fridays at around noon.
