Please read the instructions below and follow them carefully to submit your application.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must be enrolled in a ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ degree program at the time of application. This program is open to undergraduate students who have completed at least 2 years of their program and graduate students at any level. The McBurney Fellowship is an interdisciplinary program and students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

To Apply

In addition to submitting the application form, you must upload a single PDF file that includes all of the following documents:

  • Motivation letter (guidelines below)
  • CV
  • Copy of your unofficial transcript
  • Additional application materials, if applicable. Projects may indicate that you must submit an additional document (e.g., a writing sample) as part of your application. This is included in the project description.

Applicants must also have a letter of reference. This letter should be emailed directly by your referee to studentadmin.ihsp [at] mcgill.ca.

Motivation Letter Guidelines

  • Maximum of 2 pages, 11-point font, single-spaced. This maximum applies whether you are applying for one or two projects.
  • Your motivation letter should address the three following points:
  1. Please explain your interest in the project(s) you are applying for.
  2. How do your experiences and interests make you a good fit for the project(s) you’ve selected?
  3. How will working on this/these project(s) help you advance your academic and professional goals?
  • If you are applying for two projects, you may write 2, 1-page motivation letters (one for each project) OR write a single letter that speaks to your interest and experience in both projects.

Reference Letter Guidelines

Reference letters should be 1 page on official letterhead, and emailed direectly by your referee to studentadmin.ihsp [at] mcgill.ca, as stated above.

When your referee emails your reference letter, they should include your name and "McBurney Fellowship" in the subject line, so that we can easily match your letter with your McBurney Fellowship application file.

Ideally, reference letters will touch on one or some of the following:

  • Work you’ve conducted that aligns with the objectives and responsibilities of the project you’re applying for.
  • How you exemplify the requirements listed for the project you’re applying for.
  • Your interest in the subject of the project you’re applying for.
  • How you’ve stood out to your referee – as a student, researcher, employee, etc. - and why that makes you a good fit for the program.

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on:

  • Completion: The applicant submitted a complete application on time.
  • Fit for the project: The applicant meets the requirements outlined by the supervising organization in their project description.
  • Fit for the program: Through their application, the applicant shows how participating in this program will advance their own future endeavours and demonstrates their motivation to improve the health and wellbeing of marginalised communities, thus meeting the McBurney Fellowship mandate.

Review Process

All complete applications will be reviewed by the Student Affairs Administrator and project supervisors. Supervisors may identify a shortlist of candidates they would like to interview. Selections are finalized following the interview period.
