Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel (GREAT) Awards
The Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health GREAT Award program is designed to provide funds to support travel to conferences. Students participating in听other research training enhancement opportunities, such as travel for fieldwork, archival inquiry, and extra-mural collaborative research within Canada* can also apply. Students may receive only one GREAT Award per year.

ELIGIBILITY
Thesis Master's or Doctoral students are eligible for a GREAT award if they are:
- In good standing,
- Registered full time in a research degree program (i.e., thesis program),
- Have completed a Travel Registry if activity is outside the Greater Montreal Area (includes the听communities within Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, The North Shore and South Shore), and
- NOT in time limitation.
Students in "Thesis Evaluation" status are NOT eligible to apply.
Priority will be given to students who are presenting their own scientific results and who have not previously received a travel award from the University.
GREAT Awards are NOT for practicum or internship funding.
VALUE OF AWARDS
Awards valued at half the proposed expenses,听up to a maximum of $1000, are available to pay for travel, subsistence, conference fees, etc. at the recipient鈥檚 discretion. Expenditure must be justified with receipts.
SUPERVISOR CONTRIBUTION
The recipient鈥檚 supervisor is expected to provide a monetary contribution to support the student鈥檚 travel needs. The minimum supervisor contribution is expected to equal that of the Departmental award. Confirmation of this contribution as well as a short statement regarding the academic value of the activity is to be uploaded as a PDF file with the application.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- Completed听on-line application form,
- Supervisor statement regarding the academic value of activity, and their financial contribution,
- Confirmation of conference registration. May be submitted at a later date if not available at the time of application.
ATTRIBUTION OF AWARDS
The number of awards attributed will be dependent on the amount of funding available. Recipients of the GREAT awards will be determined by the EBOH Student Awards Committee.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS
E-mails announcing competition results will be sent to all applicants approximately 3 to 4 weeks after the application deadline.
PAYMENT
The award will be deposited in the recipient鈥檚 bank account after completion of the 平特五不中 Travel Registry. Recipients of the award must provide the Department with a copy of their expense report.

- November 15th for conference/research activity held January 1st to April 30th inclusive
- March 15th听for conference/research activity held May 1st to August 31st inclusive

Dr. Premysl and Mrs. Hana Pelnar Academic Enrichment Award
The Department offers an annual award to a meritorious student in occupational health and safety. The award is designated as the Dr. Premysl and Mrs. Hana Pelnar Academic Enrichment Award.
Established through a generous anonymous donation honouring Dr. Premysl Pelnar, a renowned occupational health physician, and his wife, Hana. Eligibility: Awarded to graduate students registered in the Occupational Health Program to further their training and professional activities in the field of occupational health. Awarded by the Chair of the Department upon consultation with the Faculty. Value: Three awards of $1,000 each available annually.
Dr. Robert S. Remis Fellowship in Epidemiology
Established in 2019 through the generous bequest of Dr. Robert S. Remis, infectious disease epidemiologist, BSc 1967, MDCM 1972, in support of one outstanding graduate student pursuing research in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health.
Eligibility
Awarded annually on the basis of academic merit by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health. Preference will be given to students in the field of infectious disease epidemiology. The fellowship may be held for up to three years or the duration of the student's study program, whichever is shorter.
Value
$20,000 per year for a maximum of three years for PhD students or a maximum of two years for MSc students.

MSc and PhD in Epidemiology or Biostatistics students are invited to apply for this Graduate Fellowship.
