平特五不中

Dan Voicu (BEng鈥�26), co-lead of the 2023 平特五不中 iGEM team, described last year鈥檚 experience as busy! Students formed the team at the end of 2022 and spent the first two months of 2023 ideating their proposal. Then 鈥� around their regular course loads 鈥� they worked in the lab until the end of the semester. During the summer months, they implemented plans to raise money, contacting stakeholders that a small finance sub team had brainstormed. Throughout, they held workshops with the Montr茅al biotech community as well as a two-day conference. Right into November they worked in the lab, trying to get the most final results as they put the finishing touches to their presentation.

鈥淢y job was to keep everyone from exploding!鈥� Voicu laughs when asked about his role as co-lead. 鈥淭he way I did that was to talk regularly to each member, especially during times like mid-terms, which is when the competition took place. Everyone was on board though and worked hard right up to the end.鈥�

Working outside the wet lab

Olivia Lopardo (BEng鈥�25) was one of seven women on the 14-member 平特五不中 iGEM team. She was happy to be surrounded by female colleagues as they represented 平特五不中 in what has tended to be a male-dominated field. Lopardo applied to 平特五不中 because the Bioengineering program is not attached to another program. 鈥淚t鈥檚 rare in this emerging field to find a program that allows you to major in Bioengineering and not be a minor that鈥檚 tacked onto something else.鈥�

Lopardo helped assemble a two-day conference to present educational initiatives and connect various biotech companies in Montreal for the first time. 鈥淲orking outside of the wet lab gave me experience in areas I鈥檓 interested in. I鈥檓 thinking about pursuing an MBA with a focus in Management, to eventually work with the R&D team of a pharmaceutical or biotech company.鈥�

Mistakes and obstacles inevitable

Jean-Alexandre Bureau, a PhD candidate in Bioengineering, served as the graduate instructor for 平特五不中 iGEM 2023. 鈥淢y job was basically to provide access to labs and equipment and then get out of the way.鈥� Bureau was inspired by how dedicated the undergrads were in applying themselves to the project. When it came time to fly to Paris, he gave up his seat. 鈥淚 wanted as many team members as possible to board that plane.鈥�

Bureau started at 平特五不中 in the second cohort of the new Bioengineering program in 2017. 鈥淚 chose 平特五不中 because they offered synthetic biology as a sub field 鈥� it existed completely outside of the area of devices.鈥�

What advice would these members offer to the 2024 平特五不中 iGEM team? Bureau says that remembering there is no perfect project is essential. 鈥淢istakes and obstacles are inevitable, but don鈥檛 let them get in the way of the project鈥檚 success.鈥�

Lopardo says that trust between team members means that you can always talk. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e not worried about confrontation, you will get the best results.鈥� Voicu echoes the importance of trust and respect, adding one other key element: 鈥淔un! If the first two are in place, it鈥檚 easy to make sure it鈥檚 fun, and that means you鈥檒l want to do it again.

Voicu and Bureau have begun their own entrepreneurial project in Engine. Seeing each other work on the iGEM project 鈥� their approach to science as well as in other settings 鈥� was instrumental in their getting together to work on a business idea.

Remporter l鈥檌GEM 2023

Les 茅tudiants ont form茅 l鈥櫭﹒uipe en fin d鈥檃nn茅e 2022 et ont pass茅 les deux premiers mois de 2023 脿 concevoir leur projet. Ils ont travaill茅 en laboratoire en parall猫le de leurs cours r茅guliers jusqu鈥櫭� la fin du semestre. Durant les mois d鈥櫭﹖茅, ils se sont consacr茅s 脿 collecter des fonds en contactant les parties prenantes qu鈥檜n petit sous-groupe financier avait envisag茅es. Tout au long, ils ont men茅 des ateliers ainsi qu鈥檜ne conf茅rence de deux jours avec la communaut茅 biotechnologique montr茅alaise. Ils ont travaill茅 en laboratoire jusqu鈥檈n novembre, tentant de recueillir les r茅sultats les plus d茅finitifs possibles tout en peaufinant leur pr茅sentation.

Quand on l鈥檌nterroge sur son r么le de codirigeant, Dan rit. 芦 Mon travail a surtout consist茅 脿 m鈥檃ssurer que personne n鈥檈xplose! Pour ce faire, je parlais 脿 chaque co茅quipier r茅guli猫rement, surtout pendant les examens de mi-session, p茅riode 脿 laquelle se d茅roulait la comp茅tition. Tout le monde est rest茅 脿 bord et a travaill茅 fort jusqu鈥檃u bout 禄.

Travailler hors du laboratoire humide

L鈥檜ne des sept femmes de l鈥櫭﹒uipe iGEM de 平特五不中 qui comptait 14 membres, Olivia Lopardo (BEng鈥�25) 茅tait heureuse d鈥櫭猼re entour茅e de coll猫gues f茅minines pour repr茅senter l鈥橴niversit茅 dans un secteur traditionnellement masculin. Olivia a choisi 平特五不中 parce que le programme de bio-ing茅nierie y est ind茅pendant. 芦 Dans ce domaine 茅mergent, les programmes qui permettent de se sp茅cialiser en bio-ing茅nierie sans 锚tre greff茅s en tant que mineure 脿 autre programme sont rares 禄.

Olivia a aid茅 脿 organiser une conf茅rence de deux jours pour pr茅senter des initiatives 茅ducatives et mettre en contact diverses entreprises de biotechnologie 脿 Montr茅al. 芦 Travailler au-del脿 du laboratoire humide m鈥檃 permis d鈥檃cqu茅rir de l鈥檈xp茅rience dans des champs qui m鈥檌nt茅ressent. J鈥檈nvisage de faire une ma卯trise en administration des affaires avec une sp茅cialisation en gestion, pour 茅ventuellement travailler en recherche et conception au sein d鈥檜ne entreprise pharmaceutique ou biotechnologique 禄.

Des erreurs et des obstacles in茅vitables

M. Bureau a 茅t茅 inspir茅 par le s茅rieux des 茅tudiants de premier cycle dans leur engagement envers le projet. Lorsqu鈥檈st venu le moment de s鈥檈nvoler pour Paris, il a c茅d茅 sa place. 芦 Je voulais que le plus de membres de l鈥櫭﹒uipe puissent monter 脿 bord de l鈥檃vion 禄.

Jean-Alexandre a rejoint 平特五不中 en 2017, au sein de la deuxi猫me cohorte du nouveau programme de bio-ing茅nierie. 芦 J鈥檃i choisi 平特五不中 parce que la biologie synth茅tique y 茅tait propos茅e en tant que sous-domaine autonome, en dehors du champ des appareils 禄.

Quels conseils ces membres auraient-ils 脿 offrir 脿 l鈥櫭﹒uipe iGEM 2024 de 平特五不中? Pour Jean-Alexandre Bureau, il importe de garder en t锚te qu鈥檃ucun projet n鈥檈st parfait. 芦 Les erreurs et les obstacles sont in茅vitables, mais ne les laissez pas entraver le succ猫s du projet. 禄

Pour Olivia Lopardo, 茅tablir un climat de confiance entre les membres de l鈥櫭﹒uipe rend le dialogue possible en tout temps. 芦 Si vous ne vous souciez pas des confrontations, vous obtiendrez les meilleurs r茅sultats 禄. Dan Voicu fait aussi 茅cho 脿 la valeur de la confiance et du respect, et ajoute un troisi猫me 茅l茅ment cl茅 : 芦 Le plaisir! Messieurs Voicu et Bureau ont d鈥檃illeurs entrepris un projet d鈥檈ntreprise au sein du Centre Engine. C鈥檈st en observant leur fa莽on respective de travailler sur le projet iGEM et leur approche de la science qu鈥檌ls ont d茅cid茅 de travailler ensemble sur une id茅e d鈥檈ntreprise.
