Employer Onboarding

Welcome!

The Micro-ExP you're providing helps students develop skills for their future careers. By treating this experience as hands-on training, you're helping our students transition smoothly from school to the 鈥渞eal-world." We hope that your supervisory experience will be mutually beneficial!听This page contains practical tips for managing students and helping them get the most out of their micro-experience!

How will I communicate with my students?

  • Engage the students in whatever way works best for you. This could be email, Zoom, etc.
  • All Micro-ExP students belong to a MS Teams group that allows them to collaborate with their team-members in real-time. If you鈥檇 like to join your students in this space and use it to communicate with your students throughout the week, let us听know so we听can invite you to join.

How will I share files with students?

Before choosing a method, consider factors such as file size limits, security features, ease of use, and whether the recipient needs to download additional software or create an account.

  • Email is easy听If it's only a few light听files
  • File-sharing cloud-based platforms听let you upload multiple files and share them via a link (e.g.,听Dropbox, Google Drive, MS听OneDrive)
  • File transfer websites like WeTransfer let you transfer and receive large files (e.g., video) quickly and securely.听
  • Collaboration platforms听like Slack and MS听Teams allow file sharing within the听platform. MS Teams can be convenient if you join the team space your students will be using to work on their project.

Kicking-Off the Experience Successfully

The kick-off is when you meet with the student(s) to review project goals, the tasks, and provide the necessary tools and resources. Here are a few tips to make an efficient use of your time:

  • Plan an agenda to ensure important items don't fall between the cracks.
  • Share the information/materials necessary for your students to complete their project.
  • Communicate and clarify your preferred ways of working.

Manage Expectations

Here are some key themes to focus on when you are managing the expectations of students:

  • Identify your desired results in a way that is clear about what is to be done and how - e.g., use MS Word for听the听report,听don't exceed 10pgs/slides, etc.
  • Hosting a mid-week check-in is a good way to monitor progress, provide feedback and assess the situation for any scope changes along the way.

Offer Effective Feedback

Once the project/placements end you will need to give students feedback about their deliverable submissions. In general, good feedback often has 4 components:

  • Timely - acknowledges听success immediately
  • Specific - coaches them on improvements by giving听concrete examples
  • Actionable

Other tips for success!

  • If you are giving students access to drives or听folders (e.g., google drive), send instructions and links before the kick-off meeting, so you can听confirm they are able to do what they need to听during the call.
  • You may want them to appoint a team liaison that is your go-between.听This can save you time and effort when certain questions come up.
