Validity of Remote Video Screening with Screenshot Photography in Orthodontics: A Pilot Study

Background:Â Initial screenings in orthodontics are designed to assess irregularities in dental occlusion or the development of jaws in all three spatial dimensions. The goal is to recommend early intervention to prevent further complications. The incorporation of digital technologies in orthodontics, known as "teleorthodontics," can enhance accessibility to early care, encourage patient education, and provide appropriate treatment. Nevertheless, there is a research gap in this field.
Objective:Â The objective of the study is to assess the feasibility, logistics, and potential challenges of Remote Orthodontic Screening. We intend to get a first estimate of the validity and reliability of
Remote Orthodontic Screening (ROS), as a test for screening orthodontic patients at the ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Undergraduate Orthodontic Clinic. ROS will be compared with the gold standard, Chair-side Orthodontic Screening (COS) in children aged 7-15 years old.
Methods: Each participant will be evaluated twice during the same appointment. One orthodontist of the research team will first evaluate the participant via ROS, followed by a second orthodontist who
will evaluate the patient through chairside orthodontic screening The evaluations will consist of the participant’s facial characteristics (facial proportions and symmetry, facial profile and smile) and dental characteristics (Angle classification, overjet, overbite and amount of crowding).
Results:Â Currently, the inter-rater & intra-rater calibrations are being performed. Once the inter-rater and intra-rater calibrations are completed, participants will be recruited. With the preliminary data
from the pilot study, estimates of the specificity, PPV, and NPV, as well as the qualitative evaluations of participants’ experience with both modalities will be assessed.
Conclusion: This study aims to understand whether ROS can be used as a tool to facilitate the screening of orthodontic patients compared to chairside orthodontic screening. The role of teleorthodontics
could be a new innovative method of delivering efficient and optimized orthodontic patient care.
