Advisory Committee (AC) and Progress Tracking

Advisory Committee (AC)

Doctoral students are required to have an Advisory Committee (AC) with a minimum of 3 members:

  1. the student鈥檚 primary supervisor;
  2. a second Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences member, including a co-supervisor;
  3. another expert in the student鈥檚 research area. This expert may be affiliated with any Faculty or university and can be a co-supervisor.

The AC may also include additional members, as per the supervisor鈥檚 assessment of the student鈥檚 needs.

Students will receive a Committee Membership form聽to complete at the beginning of the program. The AC should been formed by the end of the student鈥檚 first semester and will be closely involved in the student's program of study.

AC Meetings and Progress Tracking

The AC meets once a year during the student's degree progression. In addition to discussing research-related topics, students and their AC will complete the Graduate Research Progress Tracking Report once a year. Having agreed upon written expectations and clearly defined requirements aids in reduced completion times and leads to fewer supervisor-supervisee misunderstandings. The report must be uploaded to myProgress.

At the student's final AC meeting, the AC will confirm that the student has sufficient data to begin writing the thesis. The final meeting must be held at least 6 months before initial thesis submission.

Notes

External award holders (e.g., recipients of NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR fellowships) must also submit the signed form, with the supervisor cc-ed, to GPS Funding.

Please refer to the Regulations on Graduate Student Research Progress Tracking for more information.

The Graduate Student Research Progress Tracking Form is a fillable pdf form and can be signed with digital signatures. Download the pdf from your browser (Firefox and Chrome work best with digital signatures) and save it to your desktop. Open the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader and save it again after filling it in.

General rationales and practical advice on progress reporting are available on the Monitoring student progress page of the Supervision: Graduate and Postdoctoral Support website.
