Description: EDEA 472 students in their final semester of their听Music Education degree are combining with volunteer members from听the New Horizons Montreal Band, a intergenerational concert band听now in their second year of operation. The seniors are learning听how to play band instruments (most are in their 2nd year of this听process), and the 平特五不中 Students are learning to become听teachers.
The Schulich School of Music is thrilled to announce the appointment of legendary Canadian tenor Ben Heppner to the voice faculty of the Schulich School of Music for the academic year 2015-16. One of Canada鈥檚 greatest artists, Mr. Heppner has received acclaim on the world鈥檚 most prestigious opera stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, and the Vienna State Opera. Mr. Heppner will teach over a dozen voice students and contribute immensely to the rich and dynamic life of the Voice Area at the School.
Professor Fabrice Marandola is interviewed by Le听Devoir in a special section dedicated to the grand opening of Le听Vivier at his new address, the 'Ges霉-Centre de cr茅ation' in听Montreal. Le Vivier comprises 34 music ensembles and听organisations dedicated to new music. Fabrice Marandola has been the听President of the Board of Directors since last fall.

The live@CIRMMT concert, "De souffles et de machines" performed听by the Quasar saxophone quartet, has been selected as a finalist听for a 30th Grand Prix du Counseil des arts de Montr茅al.听
Next season look for the participation of several Schulich alumni in different productions at the Canadian Opera Company.听 In October 2015 the COC will present the world premiere of Pyramus and Thisbe, written by composer Barbara Monk Feldman.听 The work is inspired by the beauty, light, and colour of her native Gasp茅 Peninsula and is a timeless story of star-crossed lovers. In February 2016 Jordan de Souza will conduct two听 performances of the Canadian Opera Company's production of Le Nozze di Figaro.
Working with researchers from the Technische Universit盲t Berlin and the University of Montreal, Prof. McAdams compared reactions to various pieces of music from two groups of people: 40 Mbenz茅l茅 Pygmies in the Congolese rainforest and 40 Canadians in Montreal. 鈥淭he emotional diversity of music depends on who we are, what we鈥檝e experienced and who we identify with 鈥 that鈥檚 the most exciting part of music,鈥 McAdams says.

Schulich Professor alcides lanza, pianist, conductor and composer is the winner of the XIII Prize Tom谩s Luis de Victoria 2014, offered by the SGAE Foundation in Madrid. This prize recognizes his substantial contribution to the enrichment of the musical life of the Ibero-American people. It also recognizes lanza's distinguished career as a composer and pedagogue.听The award ceremony took place on May 28, 2015, at the Auditorium of the Real Academia de las Artes, Madrid, Spain
The Schulich School of Music congratulates former Dean of Music, Professor John Grew, alumni Jens Lindemann (BMus鈥88), and Faculty Advisory Board Member Joan Ivory (BA鈥54)听 on their being named among the 95 newest appointees to the Order of Canada named December 26th, 2014.听 The honour, established in 1967 by the Queen, recognizes contributions to Canada; its motto, desiderantes meliorem patriam means "they desire a better country." Appointees are made on the recommendation of an independent advisory council headed by Canada's Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Prof. Dominique Labelle's performance in the听Philharmonia Baroque鈥檚 concert performance of Handel鈥檚 鈥淭eseo鈥 at Alice Tully Hall was featured in the New York Times as one of the funniest classical music performances of 2014.

The 平特五不中 Symphony Orchestra with conductor Alexis Hauser and soprano soloist Jane Archibald performed to an appreciative audience which included members of the Franz Paul Decker family and Mrs. Catherine Thornhill Steele, in whose honour the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist Fund is named. 听The first review to appear (in Le Devoir) remarks on the quality of the program the of the conductor, soloist and orchestra. 听

Following听the recent cross-country tour of听G茅n茅ration2014,听a series of concerts听produced by the Ensemble Contemporain de Montr茅al (ECM+),听Mr. Anthony Tan won both the Jury Prize and the Audience Prize for his composition entitled听Ksana II,听which received its world premiere performance in Banff on November 6, 2014.听Mr Tan is in the PhD program (composition), jointly supervised by Profs. John Rea and Stephen McAdams.
The 75th听anniversary of the OSM Standard Life Competition was held from November 18 to 22, 2014, in Montreal. 听Schulich School of Music alumni were well represented amongst the winners. 听Since its creation in 1940, the OSM Standard Life Competition has helped launch the careers of some 300 prizewinners onto the national and international scene.
Prof. McAdams, the Canada Research Chair in听Music Perception and Cognition at the Schulich School of Music,听delivered the 2014 William Poland Lecture in Music Theory at Ohio听State University's School of Music. The Poland lectures are an听endowed series that presents cutting-edge perspectives on music听theory. Prof. McAdams presented the work from a research project听on Orchestration and Perception supported by the Quebec Society听and Culture funding agency (FRQSC).
