Exiled Belarusian presidential candidate Ales Michalevic, winner of Rights & Democracy鈥檚 2011 John Humphrey Award, will offer an overview of the situation with respect to human rights and democracy in Belarus, and share his personal story, rife with oppression and violations of basic freedoms.

About the speaker

A candidate in the 2010 Belarusian presidential election, Mr. Michalevic was arrested and wrongfully imprisoned by the government of Alexander Lukashenka, widely recognized as Europe's last dictator. He was held for more than two months and subjected to torture for the duration.

Since March 2011, he has been living in exile in the Czech Republic and Poland after fleeing Belarus for fear of reprisals and his life.

Mr. Michalevic's speech at 平特五不中 will kick off a cross-Canada tour that also includes stops in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. He will be presented with the John Humphrey Award at a ceremony in Ottawa on Nov. 22.
