Mission statement:
To provide the trainee with consultant expertise in the treatment of acute post-operative pain in the pediatric population, and to expose the trainee to the principles of chronic pain care in children. Additionally, the trainee will acquire clinical training for administering tertiary and quaternary anesthetic care to the pediatric patient, including neonatal surgery, but excluding cardiac surgery.

The Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital, Acute Pain Service is part of the MCH, Department of Anesthesia and had been implemented as a formal entity in 2001.听 This clinical service is offered to pediatric patients treated at the MCH, mostly inpatients from the surgical and medical services.听 This service is operated 24 hrs/day,7 days/week by a multidisciplinary anesthesia team.听 Patients are mostly from Montreal and its suburbs but also come from the Province of Quebec, other parts of Canada and the eastern United States for tertiary care (neurosurgery, cardiac, plastic, orthopedic surgery).
The Chronic Pain Service evaluates and treats chronic pain in children in a multidisciplinary way.听 The core team comprises a physician, psychologist, physiotherapist and clinical nurse specialist.听 Medical and surgical specialists and members of Social Services are consulted when needed.听 The clinic sees patients one day a week.听 About 100 patients are seen per year.听 Blocks are done when needed in the OR.

Research activities in the department are directed by Dr. D. Withington (Research Director).听 One day per week is reserved for research activities and other academic endeavors.
Description:
The trainee is expected to:
- Perform clinical work under the supervision of the staff anesthesiologists. - Perform call duties:
- Second Call:听 maximum of 8 Second Calls per month.听 Second Call begins at 15:30 on weekdays, and 7:00 on weekends\
- Pain Call: Once weekend per month.
- Stat Weekends:听 Maximum of 3 stat holiday weekends in 12 months.
- Participation in Monday Morning Departmental Rounds, Thursday Morning Resident/Fellow Rounds and 平特五不中 Department of Anesthesia Journal Club.听
- Support will be provided to allow the candidate to attend a scientific meeting to present a paper or scientific exhibit subject to the following:
- research carried out by the Fellow whilst in the Department of Anaesthesia at The Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital
- meeting shall be approved by the Department
- The fellows will have access to the 平特五不中, Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital and Departmental libraries.听 The fellow will also have access to a computer.

Acute/Chronic Pain Service Component:
- Fellows will spend two days a week on the Acute/Chronic Pain Service Procedural Anesthesia throughout the year. Supervisors: Dr. Pablo Ingelmo and Dr. Chantal Frigon.
- Fellows will acquire expertise in regional anesthesia with ultrasound. Supervisor: Dr. M-P. Malenfant-Rancourt.
- May participate in the Chronic Pain Clinic every Thursday and performs blocks on other days when indicated.
- Responsibilities on the Acute/Chronic Pain Service:
- APS rounds with the APS team (Pain Nurse, Resident, Staff)
- Cover consults to the APS and CPS.
- Cover assigned clinical procedural anesthesia (LPs, Biopsies, Endoscopies, Cath Lab, MRI) with the staff assigned to pain.听
- Round at the end of day
- During calls on weekends, the fellow is expected to be rounding pain patients Saturday/Sunday morning.
- Teaching/Presentations:
- Presentation to ward nurses.听 Mentor Dr. Chantal Frigon.
- Pain Day Teaching, the fellow will observe for the first session.
- Monday Morning Rounds, Mentor Dr. Chantal Frigon
