Transportation: What鈥檚 Fuelling the Transition?

Now that the nations of the world have agreed to act on climate change, and that most of them have set GHG reduction goals, it is time to take serious actions at reducing our dependency on fossil fuels. Since a large fraction of them are consumed 鈥 quite inefficiently, moreover 鈥 for transporting goods and people, reaching these goals will require major transformations of this sector of activity.

So, the Annual Trottier Symposium series will contribute to this mandatory energy transition by dedicating its fourth symposium to the transport sector and the challenges it faces, by exploring a number of possible futures, knowing that many upcoming technologies make a transition to a low-carbon society more likely each day.

Technology alone will not be enough, however. But introduction of new, disruptive technologies is the occasion to re-evaluate our portfolio of transit tools. And if by the same occasion we revisit the goals of transportation, urban design, and the public and private vision, not only can we obtain environmental benefits, but also economic and social ones.

A successful transition will be more likely if we first ask ourselves the right questions. Ours is: 鈥淲hat鈥檚 fuelling the transition?鈥 What will be yours?

About the Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design聽

Each year the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) at 平特五不中 and the Institut de l鈥櫭﹏ergie Trottier (IET) at Polytechnique Montr茅al take turns hosting this event. Made possible through the generous support of Dr. Lorne Trottier, this is a forum for students, professors, government and industry professionals to connect with the general public on advancements for sustainability through engineering and design. The First Annual Symposium was hosted by 平特五不中 in聽2014聽on Sustainable Cities and Industries and the Second Annual Symposium was hosted by Polytechnique Montr茅al in聽2015聽on Energy in Quebec and Canada: A Conversation Starter and the Third Annual Symposium was once again hosted by 平特五不中 in聽2016聽on Renewable Energy: What holds us back? What moves us forward?鈥

The Annual Symposium focuses attention on energy usage and the relevance of sustainable engineering and design to peoples鈥 lives. This series has been made possible by the generous gift from the Lorne Trottier Family Foundation.
