Dr. Shane Sweet, Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education was just renewed as a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Participation, Well-Being, and Physical Disability. Shane's research involves studying well-being and participation in daily and social activities among people living with physical disabilities. This kind of practical application research will impact society in terms of optimizing interventions and programs aimed at enhancing the lives of people living with physical disabilities.

Call for Research Participants: Paid Study in Endurance Runners

Participate in this study to investigate the acute independent effects of dietary protein supplementation on bone metabolism in healthy adults aged 18-35 years participating in high-volume endurance running.

Duration:
One baseline visit followed by two trials of 2 days each (approximately 15 hours total).

Criteria:
1) Must be between the age of 18 - 35 years old
2) Running at least 40 km/week the past 6 months

Participate in a Research Study on Bone Health & Exercise Behaviours in Diabetes

Friday, March 8 is International Women’s Day, marking the achievements of women and serving as a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

This year’s theme is Inspire Inclusion – a message exemplified by ƽ��岻��’s female leaders. At the moment, 10 of ƽ��岻��’s 14 deans are women; three are the first to ever to lead their Faculty.

Their thoughts on the women who inspire them, the progress that’s been made, and the barriers that have yet to be broken.

Caitlin Mazurek's Successful Doctoral Defense in KPE

On Friday, February 23, Caitlin Mazurek successfully defended her multidisciplinary PhD thesis titled "Knowledge creation and translation in sports biomechanics: applications in ice hockey."

Her research includes work on hockey skating coordination, academic and industry research partnerships in sports science, and implementing biomechanical analyses with a remote First Nation hockey team.

She is now working with the Tampa Bay Rays as a performance science intern.

Oct 13~15 2022, TIE lab participated in the SCAPPS (Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology) 2022 Conference in Montreal, Quebec. November 18th, 2021, Dr. Shane Sweet and Mr. Jacques Comeau collaboratively presented at the graduate seminar of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education. They shared their experience in doing community-based research on peer mentorship for people living with spinal cord injuries.

Jacques worked as a peer integration counselor for Moelle épinière et motricité Québec (a local community organization for people with spinal cord injury) in the past ten years. He has been actively involved in multiple research projects in collaboration with the TIE lab.

November 8, 2021, it's so exciting to announce that our lab recently published two papers on Spinal Cord. Both of them came from the study in which our research team collaborated with community partners to interview multiple individuals who have been involved in community-based spinal cord injury (SCI) peer mentorship programs. This study is under the larger project of developing an evaluation tool for SCI peer mentorship led by TIE lab director, Dr. Shane Sweet.

November 3rd, 2021, TIE lab member Emilie Michalovic successfully completed her PhD dissertation defense. Emilie joined the TIE lab in 2015 and has been an excellent lab member over the past six years. She is Dr. Sweet's first student who completed her PhD degree. Emilie's research focuses on enhancing the social participation and well-being of people living with COPD.

Being the senior student of the lab, Emilie always takes on a leadership role. She loves helping her labmates, giving new ideas to the lab, and sharing experiences with people around her.

October 20-22, 2021, the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology 2021 Conference was held online by the Nipissing University. TIE lab members, Jordan Herbison and Emilie Michalovic gave excellent oral presentations on their research. Olivia Pastore and Tayah Liska successfully presented their posters. TIE lab alumni, Dr. Meredith Rocchi, also presented her research at the conference. TIE Lab had the chance to exchange with scholars from universities across the country.

September 24th, 2021, TIE lab student Olivia successfully defended her Ph.D. comprehensive exam. She did an excellent job and received lots of praise from her committee members on both the written and oral components.

In the summer, Olivia spent three months writing the answers to the questions in the topics on physical activity trends, self-compassion conceptualization, and RCT alternative methodologies.

Douglas Cooke BSc(PE) 1952 to support outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Education entering the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education to pursue an MA in Physical and Health Education Pedagogy, Adapted Physical Activity or Sport and Exercise Psychology. October 2nd, 2020, TIE lab student Zhiyang (George) successfully completed the oral defense for the Ph.D. comprehensive exam. There were some great discussions between Zhiyang and the committee members: Dr. Shane Sweet, Dr. Gordon Bloom, and Dr. Aliki Thomas.

Zhiyang has increased his knowledge in the topics on disability models, theories of mentorship, and knowledge translation. We believe that he will keep improving his knowledge and skills and make more contributions to the TIE lab.

Congrats to TIE lab student Zhiyang (George) Shi on publishing his Master's thesis "Exploring how Chinese adults living with spinal cord injury viewed the prospect of inpatient peer support programs within a hospital-based rehabilitation setting" on Spinal Cord.

Spinal Cord is the official journal of the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), publishing research on spinal cord anatomy, physiology and management of injury and disease for over 50 years.

TIE lab members presented their research at ECSEPS 2019

March 22-23, 2019, the 23rd Annual Eastern Canada Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium (ECSEPS) regional conference was held in Vaughan, Ontario. TIE lab members presented their research and enjoyed their time there. Bradley, François, Laura, Emilie, Shannon, Natasha, Erin, and Zhiyang did a great job presenting their research. Undergraduate students, Matthew, Mana, and Kaila also presented their research in great fashion.

Oct 18-20, 2018, the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS) annual conference was held in Toronto, Ontario. TIE lab members showed up as a cohesive crew and enjoyed their time at the conference. Shannon and Meredith both had amazing oral presentations. Bradley, Laura, François, Emilie, and Zhiyang all presented their own posters. New graduate students, Erin and Natasha, obtained growth from attending the conference.

TIE lab member Meredith Rocchi's article titled "Utiliser la télésanté pour améliorer la motivation, l'activité physique et la qualité de vie chez les adultes souffrant d'une lésion de la moelle épinière" was published in Paraquad Magazine. Paraquad magazine was created in June 1976 and has become over the years an invaluable link between Moelle épinière et motricité Québec (MEMO-Qc) and its members and partners.

TIE lab Master's student François Jarry was featured in the Journal de Montréal regarding his 6th place finish at the Montreal Marathon on September 23rd 2018. François was the fastest Quebecer of the race finishing with a time of 2:22.03. The article talks about his experience with the race and his plans for the future!
