Vue d'ensemble

Géographie : Key classical, Enlightenment, and contemporary texts on memory and place-making. Examination of the transformation of public space (particularly monuments and memorials) in post-communist states, focusing on official attempts to re-imagine recent histories and on public responses to these efforts. Comparative analysis of "monumental politics" in North America and Western Europe.

  • Prerequisite: GEOG 316 or GEOG 331 or permission of instructor

  • Restriction: Not open to students who have taken POLI 432

  • The course includes a fee of $15 for a walking field trip of monuments and memorials in Montreal, led by personnel from Heritage Montreal who are well-known local experts on the urban landscape of the city. As a non-profit agency, Heritage Montreal offers tours of the city and must charge a nominal amount for them.
