The fourth cohort fellows of the CAnD3 program contains a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. Through our Fellows Features, we aim to showcase these interests and offer insight into their passion through creating inclusive spaces and capturing their unique experiences within the CAnD3 program.

We caught up with two of our Fellows, Aida and Regan, to ask about their experiences with the CAnD3 program thus far. Read on to learn about their research and what they hope to achieve during the remainder of the program and beyond.

There is much to look forward to heading into the second half of the 2023-24 CAnD3 training year. Our Fellows will start 2024 with a discussion of recent advances in digital demography and explore topics like adaptive policymaking, loneliness trajectories of older adults, and social media analysis in the next six months. They will also be producing their portfolios, Dragons' Den data visualizations, and policy briefs.

The first half of the 2023-24 training year has officially wrapped up. Over the past four months, our 22 CAnD3 Fellows have completed a total of 15 training sessions on topics ranging from research replicability and data ethics to discussions about the latest population analytics research and time management. The new cohort comes from diverse backgrounds, with eight in master’s programs, 13 in PhD programs, and one completing postdoctoral training. They bring a range of disciplinary training from political science and geography to gerontology and medicine.

In May 2023, Prof. Jennifer Elrick began her appointment as Chair in Multiculturalism at ƽ��岻��. The Chair, which is endowed with funds from the Government of Canada, was first established in 1995 as the Chair in Canadian Ethnic Studies. Its purpose remains to support research on issues of diversity and multiculturalism.

Congratulations to Daniel Sailofsky, one of our Ph.D. students, who has accepted a tenure track position as Lecturer (the equivalent of an Assistant Professor position in North America) at the Department of Criminology and Sociology, Middlesex University, London, UK.

Daniel wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on athlete-perpetrated violence against women and its effects on their career outcomes.

Nicole Denier received her Ph.D. in 2016 (Essays on job loss and stratification in Canada and the United States), spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Colby College, and then took up an assistant professorship at the University of Alberta. She has published extensively on labour markets and is currently continuing her widely cited work with Sean Waite (also a ƽ��岻�� Ph.D.) on the employment outcomes of gays and lesbians.

Labour unions in the United States have suffered a series of high-profile defeats in union representation elections in recent years, most recently at Amazon in Bessemer, Alabama. While some might think this indicates that workers are not interested in unionizing, available polling data suggests that far more workers want unions than currently have them. Workers at the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama voted by more than 2-1 against joining a union, following a months-long campaign that drew international media attention. This was a major setback for U.S. unions, who see unionizing Amazon as key to reviving labor’s fortunes. In an op-ed published in the Globe and Mail on April 10, Prof. Barry Eidlin explained both what made the election so significant, and what the loss means for the future of labor.

July 2015 | Congratulations to our recent PhD, Christine Proulx. Her paper, co-authored with her doctoral thesis supervisor Céline Le Bourdais, “Impact of Providing Care on the Risk of Leaving Employment in Canada”, published in the Dec. 2014 issue of the Canadian Journal on Aging, was selected to be among 16 finalists for the 2015 Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research. The paper was selected from over 2500 articles in 77 academic journals, and is based on her doctoral dissertation.
