What Does SWSA Do?
-听supports the social work undergraduate student community
- facilitates meaningful learning opportunities outside of school
- organizes fun social events for students
- advocates on behalf of students for school changes and improvements
SWSA is a liaison between students and faculty at the School of Social Work and between the School of Social Work and the wider 平特五不中 community.

SWSA Student Spotlight!
Watch out for SWSA's Student Spotlight! This initiative aims to give students a platform to share what they do outside the school with the 平特五不中 Social Work community. Every two weeks, we will share a text written by a social work student on a past or present volunteer experience, project, internship, work experience or advocacy work they wish to share with their peers.听
Student Spotlight - Meet Julian Grau-Brown, U3!
For the second year in a row, I had the privilege of providing the James Lyng Community with a second annual sneaker drive. With help from my friends and family, I was able in 2021 to provide 150 sneakers to each student at James Lyng High School in St-Henri and then able to duplicate it once again in 2022 for all students at the high school. If I'm really honest, this idea came from combining my passion for working with youth within the Montreal community and my passion for sneakers.
Due to interning at James Lyng High School back in 2020, I was able to create meaningful relationships with the students as an educator. I wanted to thank the students for allowing me to spend time with them and for all the laughs. Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 back in March 2020, my internship was terminated, and I wasn鈥檛 able to say goodbye to the students. Thus, the idea of creating a sneaker drive came to life.
On September 16th, 2021, my first-ever sneaker drive took place. It was a humbling experience. Having the privilege of bringing smiles through sneakers was magical and an experience I can never forget. Once the sneaker drive was completed, I was given an anonymous donation from a retired EMSB worker to allow this project to be duplicated the following year.
The second annual Sneaker Drive took place on October 17th, 2022. This year, there were More Smiles. More Sneakers. More Love. The ability to see the joy on the students' faces is an experience I will never forget. Special. That is one word that I could use to describe the second annual sneaker drive. I received a lot of love from my friends, family and the Montreal community.
I am working on expanding this project to repeat the sneaker drive for a third year in a row and get into more Montreal Schools within both the English and French systems. As mentioned previously, the goal is to bring as many smiles with as many sneakers as possible.
As a child, my parents always made sure that I started the year with a brand-new pair of sneakers. However, I know that this is not the reality for many Montreal youths, and if, through this project, I can make sure that as many Montreal youths receive a brand-new pair of sneakers to start their school year, then that鈥檚 what鈥檚 going to get done!
